Shadow Embrace is a stacking warlock Affliction talent that both increases the damage done by damage-over-time spells to the target and reduces the effect of healing-over-time spells.

Notes

This talent plays an important part in the spell rotation of high-level Affliction warlocks. By beginning the attack with a Shadow Bolt and a Haunt the warlock can apply two layers of Shadow Embrace on the target, increasing the damage of all subsequent Damage over Time spells until the effect wears off.

Bugs

This talent is currently somewhat bugged, in that only one warlock can have any stacks of Shadow Embrace on any one target. This means that in raids with multiple affliction warlocks, only will get the 10% damage bonus - other warlocks will fail to apply their stacks unless the first fails to refresh it. Essentially, all affliction warlocks after the first will do about 10% less damage. Fortunately, this is currently scheduled to be fixed in Patch 3.0.8: "Shadow Embrace: This ability will now create a separate debuff stack for each Warlock with the talent, and each warlock will benefit properly from his or her own debuff."

Patch changes

  • Patch 3.1.0 (2009-04-14): Now only increases the damage done by your shadow damage periodic spells.
  • Patch 3.0.2 (2008-10-14): This talent completely changed with version 3 of World of Warcraft. Previously it reduced physical damage done by the target by 5%, and did not stack.
  • Patch 2.3.0 (2007-11-13): This talent's effect can no longer trigger other effects.
