This article contains lore taken from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the manuals, and/or official bonus maps.

The Shadow Orb was a magical artifact imbued by the orc Shadow Council and given to Gul'dan, becoming his most coveted artifact. As Gul'dan's body was ripped to pieces by the Tomb's demonic guardians, the shadow orb was shattered into ten different fragments that became scattered throughout the underground Tomb of Sargeras. Almost 20 years later, the ten fragments were then found and pieced back together by the night elf warden, Maiev Shadowsong.[1]

Its subsequent fate is unknown.

Maiev may or may not have it.[2]

In the RPG[]

Icon-RPG This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

Maiev Shadowsong found the Orb of Shadow and used it in her bid to recapture the renegade Illidan Stormrage. Unfortunately, the shadow orb was lost during a battle and was once again shattered into ten different pieces. This time, they were scattered all across Azeroth. Some believe there may even be a piece or two hidden somewhere out in the Twisting Nether.[3] The whereabouts of the Shadow Orb are currently unknown.[4][3] When assembled, the shadow orb is a smooth solid black globe about five inches in diameter. It glows with a faint violet light and is surprisingly heavy for its size. The individual shadow orb fragments are jagged and non-luminous.[3]

Powers[]

For each fragment fused, the former fragments powers are increases.

This is the smallest fragment of the shadow orb. To activate its power, you must touch it to a weapon. The fragment fuses with the weapon.[3]

This fragment is activated as the first fragment, and grants the same bonuses, plus the following: The eye's of the weapon's wielder glow faintly.[3]

This fragment is activated as the second fragment, and grants the same bonuses, plus the following: The wielder's form darkens with shadows.[5]

Smaller fragments are to weak to grant their powers without being directly attached to a weapon. Once four or more fragments are fused, the resulting fragment is powerful enough to operate free of restrictions. The owners still grants the same bonuses.[5]

This fragment is activated as the fourth fragment, and grants the same bonuses, plus the following: On command, the owner can levitate.[5]

This fragment is activated as the fifth fragment, and grants the same bonuses, plus the following: Once per day the owner may summon a shadow.[5]

This fragment is activated as the sixth fragment, and grants the same bonuses, although they are greatly improved.[5]

This fragment is activated as the seventh fragment, and grants the same bonuses, plus the following: The owner gains the ability to fly with good maneuverability.[6]

This fragment is activated as the eight fragment, and grants the same bonuses, plus the following: The owner automatically heals faster over time.[6]

When the final fragment of the shadow orb is reconnected with its cousins, there is a burst of darkness. Lost limbs, organs and other missing body parts grow back. The dark power of the completed shadow orb can be overwhelming. The owner's most notable obsession grows stronger over time. In the case of Gul'dan, he was driven to madness to obtain the Eye of Sargeras. In Maiev's case, she was driven to recapture Illidan to the point where all other considerations were secondary.[6]
