Tree: Destruction
Overview
Shadowburn is an instant-cast damage spell, and if the target dies from the Shadowburn blast and yields experience (in the case of mobs) or honor (PvP), a Soul Shard will be created.
Shadowburn Rank 1 is learned by investing talent points in the Destruction branch of the Warlock talent tree. To execute Shadowburn, the caster requires one Soul Shard.
If the target does not die from the Shadowburn spell or does not yield experience or honor then the Soul Shard is lost. It should also be noted that while the damage inflicted by the Shadowburn spell is instantaneous, the effect of the Shadowburn spell lasts for an additional 5 seconds. If the target dies during this time and yields experience or honor then the Soul Shard is returned.
It is not possible to get two soul shards at the same time when combining Shadowburn with 
[Drain Soul].
Tips
If you want to maximise your damage as a Warlock in a party, then you should finish the mob using Shadowburn when there is too little time for another DoT or 
[Shadow Bolt].
In duels, it is tempting to save the Shadowburn until you are sure that the opponent almost dies. A better strategy may be to use Shadowburn whenever possible, right from the start. One reason is that it does Critical hit now and then, suddenly making the fight much more promising. The downside of this is that it will waste many shards. The upside is that you will get a second chance to use it, if you survive 15 seconds.
Functionality
The cooldown time after a casting of Shadowburn is 15 seconds.
