Anduin Llane Wrynn[2] is the heir to the throne of Stormwind. He is named for two venerated figures of Stormwind history: the legendary Anduin Lothar[3] and his grandfather King Llane.

Biography

The son of King Varian Wrynn, ten-year-old Anduin was given the crown in order to maintain order when Varian disappeared en route to a diplomatic conference at Theramore Isle; however, real power resided in the hands of Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, the Regent of Stormwind, and Lady Katrana Prestor, the Royal Advisor. King Varian's disappearance was a closely-kept secret, and his sudden "return" (later proven to be a weaker version of Varian that Lady Prestor could use as a puppet ruler) was treated with skepticism by both Anduin himself and other leaders, such as King Magni of Ironforge.

When Lady Prestor was revealed to be the broodmother Onyxia , Onyxia kidnapped Anduin and held him hostage in her lair. King Varian and a band of Alliance heroes traveled to Kalimdor and rescued Anduin from the black dragon.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

During the Wrath of the Lich King Beta test, the only change to the Stormwind Throne Room was the addition of the throne itself. Anduin stood in front of it at his usual spot.

Anduin currently stands at the side of his father, who has returned from his long absence. Anduin now has the title <Prince of Stormwind>.

The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm

Anduin appears as a character in The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm. In the novel, Anduin is upset over the deaths and casualties taken from war and natural disasters. He also grows upset with his father’s aggressive nature, yet also understands he needs compassion for the burdens he has to undertake to make the decisions of a leader.

Unlike his father, he has no talent for martial training. He also follows a pacifist philosophy and is more compassionate and understanding; concerned more with the preservation of life. Though not considered weak by his father, he is considered soft. King Varian allows him to spend more time in Theramore under the guidance of Jaina Proudmoore while Varian tries to resolve his bipolar personalities.

He later spends time in Ironforge where Varian hopes training with the dwarves could toughen him up. While there, Anduin witnesses first hand, the destruction of the Cataclysm as earthquakes wreaked havoc in Khaz Modan, leading to the deaths of one of his friends, Aerin. In order to stop the earthquakes, King Magni used the Ulduar tablets and was cursed with petrification.

In the wake of King Magni’s petrification, Moira Thaurissan returned to Ironforge to claim the throne. Backed by the Dark Iron clan, Moira ruled Ironforge arrogantly and with an iron fist. She held all the people of Ironforge hostage, including Prince Anduin Wrynn, who was there as a temporary steward until a proper heir could be found. Anduin escaped Ironforge using a Inv misc rune 01 [Hearthstone] given to him by Jaina Proudmoore, teleporting him to Theramore where he met Baine Bloodhoof. At Theramore he and Baine discussed their problems and their similar situations of being sons of leaders. Through their discussion, both have discovered new insights on the difference between right and wrong and what it means to be a leader. Near the end of their discussions, Anduin gave Baine Bloodhoof the great mace Fearbreaker. Anduin's reasons behind it were 'it had chosen Baine, as it had chosen Anduin before hand.'

When Anduin heard Varian and eighteen SI:7 operatives were on a mission to liberate Ironforge and assassinate Moira Thaurissan, Anduin rushed back to Ironforge to convince Varian to spare Moira’s life. Just before Varian was about to execute Moira, Anduin intervened and urged him that it would be better to guide Moira to be a better leader rather than to just execute her. Despite Moira being a tyrant who held the city hostage, she was still the legitimate heir to the throne and killing her would only put the succession of Ironforge into question, thus leading to more chaos and conflict. Where as if she lived; through her and her son, all dwarven clans can unite. Varian slowly agreed but was also conflicted as Moira had caused so much chaos and had already threatened the safety of his son. Varian agreed to spare Moira’s life but stipulated that if Moira was to be a leader and unite the dwarves, then she’d have to earn her crown by earning her people's respect. In order to take into account the opinions of all dwarves, Varian called for the formation of the Council of Three Hammers. Both father and son hugged and reconciled while the populace of Ironforge applauded King Varian’s decision.

From the WoW manual

"King Anduin is as wise a ruler as any ten-year-old has a right to be. Recently his father, King Varian Wrynn, went missing under suspicious circumstances while en route to a diplomatic summit at Theramore Isle. At the behest of the royal councilor, Lady Prestor, young Anduin was given the crown so that order could be preserved within the kingdom of Stormwind. Though few citizens are aware that their true king has been missing for so long, Anduin does the best he can to allay their fears. It is widely held that the boy will grow to become a shrewd leader one day."

Age

Lore-wise, Anduin Wrynn was ten when the original World of Warcraft game was released. However, given the time change taken into account by the release of Wrath of the Lich King, he would be 12 years of age.

Stormrage, whose action takes place sometimes after the fall of the Lich King, claims that he is not quite thirteen.

[Anduin Wrynn's Gold Coin] fished from the Dalaran fountain has the flavor text "I wish I would grow up, it feels like I've been 10 for years."

The Cataclysm takes place three years after the War against the Lich King. If correct, Anduin would be around fifteen during World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
