Silence is a priest Shadow spell that silences the target, preventing them from casting spells for 5 seconds.

Notes

This also interrupts any spell that is being cast by the target.

In PvP against casters, this can simply disable them for 5 secs.

In PvE, it IS NOT worthless. In fact, there are many caster-type mobs and they can be annoying since they can't be pulled like normal mobs. Pulling with silence will cause them to come to you to engage in melee. OR, it can stop a mob's healing which is sometimes very useful.

In PvP when used against Paladins, they can use Divine Shield to remove the Silence effect. So preferably it should be used when they have already popped DS.

"Silence" is also a general term for other abilities such as Arcane Torrent that have the same effect. It should be noted that "Silence" effects are separate from Interrupt effects which generally lock a player out of a specific spell school.

As of 3.2, the following silence abilities are available to players (most of which require talent points to either make the ability available or improve the basic ability to give it a silence effect): Shadow Priest: Silence, Affliction Warlock: Unstable Affliction (when dispelled), Rogue: Garrote, Combat Rogue: Kick, Arcane Mage: Counterspell, Marksman Hunter: Silencing Shot, Protection Warrior: Shield Bash, Protection Warrior: Heroic Throw, Protection Paladin: Avenger's Shield, Blood Death Knight: Strangulate, Blood Elfs: Arcane Torrent, Engineers: Arcane Bomb,

Patch changes

  • Patch 3.2.0 (2009-08-04): This ability will also apply a 3 second interrupt effect against non-player controlled targets, making it more versatile against creatures immune to silencing effects.
  • Patch 3.1.0 (2009-04-14): Range increased to 30 yards.
