Items that have sockets for gems.

In the Burning Crusade expansion, some items will have sockets, which can be filled with special gems (much like jewels back from Diablo 2 LoD). Sockets do NOT replace enchantments. So, an item could have up to 3 bonuses aside its default stats :

Items which currently exist will not have sockets added to them, though some of the new items you might find in Outland, and items crafted by high level crafters may have them. Sockets are not added to an item but are pre-assigned, much like the item stats are. If an item you have has a socket, anyone else with that same item also has a socket.

For example, we plan to introduce a new type of gem that grants bonuses that depend on the other types of gems your character is using. In addition, players will be able to overwrite gems, but at the cost of the gem they are replacing.
