The correct plural form of shaman is shamans. Unlike man, woman, the word sha•man is not derived from the base word man, so the plural form of man cannot be used. The word shaman is actually an incorporated foreign word to the English language (like the French word bureau) and not a word (or derived from a word) from the Middle or Old English like man. Like any incorporated word, it has to follow the same standard English rule for plural forms on nouns (e.g. paper/papers, prima donna/prima donnas) unless it already has a plural form from its original language (like the Latin syllabus/syllabi).

The etymology of the word shaman is closely related to the Evenki language (from the Tungusic family language); this dialect is widely use (and officially recognized) around the areas that we currently know as Mongolia, China and Siberia (possibly in some nomad tribes).

While it may be correctly referred to as "Shamans", it is important to make note that this is not the method that Blizzard usually uses. It may be a mistake on their part, but despite that, their use of "shaman" as a plural is common. Under their lore section, it informs users about the addition of Paladins to the Horde in the upcoming expansion, and of the new addition to the Alliance.

Another example of this inconsistent usage which is available for linking (http://worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/townhall/classcombo.html) is in the following sentence found near the bottom of the article: "The time for the draenei shaman to test themselves draws near, for the battle against the Burning Legion is once again at hand." Clearly they are using the term plurally, and the consistency in which they do so is evidence that it's not a mere typo. However, the page itself is entitled "World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade - Shamans and Paladins".

Miscellaneous
Is 'shammy' a derogatory/diminutive, affectionate or a shortening term of the word shaman?
The short answer: all of the above. At the beginning of closed Beta of World of Warcraft, some players use the word shammy as either an affectionate moniker or a shortening for Shaman. However, this term became more derogatory/diminutive/cutesy for some players (especially shaman players) as more people entered the Beta test. In the end, the term disappeared from the General channel of the game during the Open Beta.

The origin of the word might have been a shortening to go along with the useful shortening of the Paladin: Pally.

Personal Note (Whiteash/Kultalth): I still like to use the word shammy once in a while since it makes the shaman sound more easy-going, and it is also a good way to tell people indirectly that the Shaman (Horde) and the Paladin (Alliance) classes are counterparts for each other.

Perhaps the term "Shammy" has faded from use due to it being the same number of letters as "Shaman"... players are lazy. Also, Shaman is pretty easy to remember and spell. Paladin has one more syllable. Never over-estimate the spelling of the average gamer. ;-) --- Fandyllic

Personal Note by Pilum: The term "Shammy" has been used since long before WoW was released. It was, and to my knowledge still is, the most common way to refer to a shaman in Everquest. And since there is a good number of former EQ players playing WoW, it is not strange that the term is still in use.
