StarCraft II is a game that is currently being developed. According to Blizzard employees, they have been working on it for about four years. It continues the story of Protoss, Terran, and Zerg, and will have a single player mode - continuing the original StarCraft story - as well as multiplayer. The gameplay is meant to be fast paced, with large unit battles, as with original StarCraft, and will not involve heroes or emphasize mainly on micromanagement as WarCraft III did. StarCraft II will also have replay functionality, much in the way that Warcraft III did. Blizzard announced that the replays will have more features than the original Starcraft.

New units and buildings
Protoss
Currently, the following units are recognized as playable.
- Archon: Created by merging two Templar units, the Archon is a powerful melee unit with a very durable force shield and a strong energy-based attack.
- Carrier: Much like the Carrier of the original Starcraft. it creates interceptors to cause it's damage.
- Colossus: The large quad-legged vehicle fires multiple lasers per attack in a splash pattern well-suited to destroying swarms of weaker units. This unit can also traverse differences in terrain height due to its long legs, and will appear to step over ledges and other obstacles due to the inverse kinematics system.
- Dark Templar: A permanently cloaked stealth fighter.
- High Templar: A physically fragile unit with strong psychic abilities.
- Immortal: Dragoon-like walker with a strong defense against powerful attacks, but vulnerable to weaker attacks.
- Mothership: A powerful flying unit which consumes an extreme amount of resources to produce. It has powerful special abilities. Originally, the Mothership was a special unit in which only 1 could be built, however, this was changed later by weakening the unit's statistics for balancing.
- Observer: The same as the original Starcraft's version. Able to see stealthed units while being stealthed itself.
- Nullifier: A ground support unit.
- Phase Prism: A dual-purpose unit, able to transport units or act as a mobile Pylon. Apparently obsoletes and replaces the Shuttle.
- Phoenix: This air-to-air unit can overcharge its guns for a multiple projectile blast, but after the blast the ship is rendered inert for a short period. The Phoenix is very weak versus large enemy air units such as a Battlecruiser, but is powerful versus small and medium air units.
- Probe: The same as the original probe. Warps in structures for the Protoss.
- Stalker: A Dragoon-like Dark Templar unit, able to blink (short-range teleport) and deliver ranged attacks against air and ground units.
- Warp Ray: Flying unit that deals damage with a blue laser that does more damage as it focuses on the same target. Good versus heavily armored targets like buildings, weak against small arms fire.
- Zealot: Will have a new charge ability, allowing a Zealot to quickly close the distance between itself and an enemy unit.
Removed Protoss Units
Although these units were removed, they are still obtainable within the game's Campaign Editor.
- Reaver: The Reaver was originally supposed to make it into StarCraft II, but was cancelled before BlizzCon 2007. Its current fate is unresolved although Blizzard Entertainment is working on a replacement. It has still been seen in several images, even after it was confirmed to be removed.
- Soul Hunter: The Soul Hunter was a Protoss infantry unit that many fans believed resembled the Vindicator from StarCraft: Ghost. The Soul Hunter's attack was effective against biological units and buildings but weak against mechanical units and robots; Soul Hunters could gain power from draining biological units as well, firing one beam (originally) going up to three beams when fully powered up.
- Tempest: Originally set to replace the Carrier, the original was brought back, due to "emotional connections with the original unit".
Star Relic: Replaced by the Nullifier (and its Cloaking Field ability went to the Mothership).
- Twilight Archon: A large ground unit, swirling with blue energy and shooting short-ranged blasts of energy, very similar to the Archon of classic StarCraft. Though confirmed to have been removed, no reason was given as to why.
Stasis Orb: The abilities of this unit moved to Nullifier.
Terran
These are the current units recognized as palyable.
- AH/G-24 Banshee: A cloak-capable gunship. It replaces the Wraith and Valkyrie.
- Battlecruiser: Each Battlecruiser can be upgraded to have either the Yamato Cannon ability or the new Missile Barrage ability.
- Crucio Siege Tank: Similar to the original Arclite Siege tank of Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War. Can transform into a stationary 'siege cannon' mode, allowing it to strike targets at a greater range.
- Ghost: Equipped with a new sniping ability.
- Jackal: A fast vehicle armed with a flamethrower suited for destroying masses of weaker units. It apparently replaces the Vulture.
- Marauder: The replacement for the Firebat.
- Marine: Will be able to upgrade hit points with a shield.
- Medivac Dropship: A dual-purpose unit combining the old Dropship and the Medic, it is capable of transporting ground units and healing infantry.
- Nomad: An aerial spellcasting unit.
- Reaper: Uses dual pistols, can jet pack up and down ledges and lay mines.
- SCV: Creates Terran structures. Repair will be "autocast."
- Thor: Named after the Norse god of thunder. Blizzard is proposing a change to the Thor; it could be immobilized in combat before being destroyed, and could be restored by an SCV.
- Viking: This Terran vehicle can transform from a walking robot into a spacecraft. It replaces the Goliath.
Removed Terran Units
These units will still appear in the Campaign Editor.
- Cobra: A fast hover capable vehicle equipped with an electrical attack that slows enemies. It has since been canceled.
- Firebat: Firebats were much larger and tougher than they were in the original game. They were built from the Factory. They have been removed from the current build to test the Marauder, though they may return if the Marauder does not make it into future builds.
- Predator: An air to air unit; it was canceled during development.
- Medic: The healing ability of this unit has moved to Medivac Dropship.
- Mine Drone: Built by the Nomad. Has been replaced by Spider Mines from the original Starcraft.
Zerg
These are the current playable Zerg units.
- Corruptor: Attacks air units and "corrupts" them rather than destroying them.
- Drone: Mutates into various Zerg structures.
- Hydralisk: Returns with the ability to morph into the Lurker.
- Lurker: Morphed from the Hydralisk. Has the same abilities as the original.
- Infestor: Has many of the abilities of the old Defiler and Queen. Can move while burrowed. Strangely, it looks incredibly similar to C'Thun and the Old Gods of Warcraft lore.
- Larva: Returns from the Original Starcraft. Morphs into the Zerg's units.
- Mutant Larva: Larva created by a Queen. The Mutant Larva can very quickly mutate into a Zerg unit in about two seconds, quickly countering enemy tactics.
- Mutalisk: Much like the original. Can mutate into the Swarm Guardian.
- Swarm Guardian: Similar to the original Guardian, evolved from the Mutalisk, but spawns a pair of Broodlings with each attack that kills the enemy unit.
- Nydus Worm: The new transport unit for the Zerg. The concept was originally used for Starcraft: Ghost, but there are key differences in the two portrayals. Blizzard announced that due to balancing aspects, the Nydus Worm may be removed from the game. It is created on creep like a building. portrayals of the unit being created off-creep were due to Creep Patches created by the Overseer.
- Overlord: Similar to its original portrayal. It can morph into the Overseer.
- Overseer: Morphed from the Overlord. The mutation gives it the ability to detect cloaked and burrowed units, though this was originally part of the original Overlord. It creates Changelings. It can also create a small patch of creep. It can disable resource nodes for a small amount of time with slime.
- Changeling: A spy created by the Overseer. It is a very weak and has a short lifespan, much like Broodlings. The Changeling shifts its appearance to match the appearance and color of an enemy unit within twelve spaces. It will only change into a basic combat unit (so if it approaches a Stalker, it will resemble a more basic Zealot instead). It will also change in response to approaching a building (it will turn into a Marine if it approaches a Barracks, for instance). The Changeling has no attack; any weapons it appears to carry are false.
- Queen: The new Queen is very different from the original version, being a powerful attacking ground support unit ideal for Zerg defense. Only one per player can be produced, though this may change like the Protoss Mothership. It is not created from a larva, but instead created directly from the hatchery. They move incredibly slow and attack for less damage when not on creep. Blizzard intended them to be the queens of the swarm.
- Large Queen: Evolved from the Queen.
- Huge Queen: Evolved from the Large Queen.
- Roach: Can move quickly and has a fast regeneration rate.
- Ultralisk: Now has four scythes instead of two. In addition, it can now burrow.
- Zergling: New ability to mutate into suicidal "Banelings" that can roll across the terrain.
- Baneling: This green rolling unit is mutated from the Zergling. It has a suicidal attack.
- Broodling: These creatures are spawned from Swarm Guardian attacks.
- Infested Marine: Similar to Starcraft's Infested Terran in looks only. Produced from Infested Terran Buildings, it can use its rifle and has a limited lifespan.
Removed Zerg Units
These units can still be found on the Campaign Editor.
- Infested Protoss: Produced from Infested Protoss Buildings, which were also removed. This unit was removed from the latest build due to balancing reasons.
Buildings
According to most sources, many of the buildings from each race have been reincorporated into the Starcraft II, however, many new buildings have been removed, such as the Zerg Shreiker. Other old buildings, such as the Zerg Sunken and Spore colonies, have been replaced.
