A subterranian being matrix is one of the synthesis matrices that Titans use when seeding a world. Each synthesis matrix is used to achieve the Titans' goals. For Azeroth, a subterranean being matrix was modified to create a being with increased durability with an affinity for deep region shaping; the earthen are the product of this modification. After the earthen had been put into service by the "Creators", unforeseen anomalies were discovered which affected their synthesis matrix due to high-stress environments.^[1] The first series of experiments resulted in troggs and the Series Two experiments resulted in dwarves.^[2] Further experiments conducted in Ulduar resulted in earthen that were immune to whatever was causing the Curse of Flesh.^{[citation needed]}
