Origins
I believe I remember reading during the quests that these are the final products of the heavy arcane energy pouring into the Nexus that corrupted the nearby ancients. Source Quest:Secrets of the Ancients and Quest:Quickening... although it shows Crystalline Protector as the next stage...
Maybe:
Glacial Ancient → Magic-bound Ancient → Crystalline Protector → Ancient of Arcane.
