Checked all the books with Thargas. Didn't see the word clan used. Something interesting (unrelated) though i didn't pick up before. One of the dark irons said Thargas and his brother were the last MALE Anvilmars. I think our article simply states he's the last.Warthok Talk Contribs 20:47, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

I think that the Dark Iron dwarf meant that he was the last of his family tree. Saying it's a clan is incorrect, it would be as if we had the Menethil clan or the Windrunner clan just because they are from the same family. Benitoperezgaldos (talk) 20:55, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

I think the article for the line should just be under Anvilmar. or maybe make a disambig page out of that one and a Anvilmar (location page and a Anvilmar (lineage) or (line) page. For human royal families we use "house of" and for elven royalty its "dynasty". Windrunners are just under "Windrunner" so i think the same treatment would be appropriate for the Anvilmars.Warthok Talk Contribs 21:03, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

However there are rarely any clans among humans — you can see that clans among the dwarves are more common, so it would be presumed that there would be a sort of Anvilmar clan. Just as how there is the "dynasty" among elves, there is also the "House of" among humans, "Clan" should be used for dwarves, isn't that right? Though there are no actual proof that the Anvilmar is royalty (though the use of the word "patriarch" might hint at it) it should be "Anvilmar clan" anyway. About the only info we have on the nature of dwarven surnames is thus; Dwarves typically have names reflecting the sturdy nature of their past. Many also have surnames that were earned by a member of the family in service during a quest or in a particular moment of notoriety or infamy that has now become part of a family legacy.^{WRPG 34} Nothing on if they are related to clans or are aways related to clans.

As for the Anvilmars or particularly the king anvilmar, its said he was closest related to Bronzebeard clan by blood and history.

Beyond that yes I do agree that many dwarven surnames might be clan names (not sure if all are) we have evidence of such from Stormpike clan, Stonefist clan, etc. But this hasn't been confirmed specifically.Baggins (talk) 03:36, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
