FilePlanet.com 2.4.3 → 3.0.1 patch links are interchanged

The Classic patch link to FilePlanet.com points to the TBC one and the other way around as well. Both EU and US Version. The links themselves are correct. --GT-Schorsch (talk) 20:07, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Patch 3.1.1 -> 3.1.1a Suspicious Megaupload mirror

The GB file is 10KB too large. It contains within itself the patch and a file called "MSASCul.exe". It extracts both to your temporary folder, runs the exe and then installs the patch. I would suggest removing that mirror for now, and i'll try and find out what the exe tries to do. --Dadaist (talk) 10:43, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Change to the Patch Mirror Template

We should change the Patch Mirror Template to include a new row called 'registration required' (or something shorter). The term 'registration' doesn't belong in the 'ads' column and a user should know if he has to complete a registration form in order to download a single file. Rovervr (talk) 21:51, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't think the mirror site should be there if you have to register. Or, they should be put at the bottom under another heading. It's too inconvenient to register, and you wont see much traffic when there are plenty of other sites that you don't need to register. ~bobalobabingbong Nympadora on the WoW Armory -=[ T + C + ! ]=- @ 02:05, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I personally add these links for FilePlanet and are just another available option. Registration is required but the process is very short. Email is not verified and if there is no wait the download process will be faster than some of these slow DL sites. FilePlanet does get visitors coming by looking at these patches and FilePlanet download mirrors will be around forever. RCatFP (talk)
No doubt. I don't think they should be removed... ~bobalobabingbong Nympadora on the WoW Armory -=[ T + C + ! ]=- @ 16:24, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

What to do with links to link-providers?

I'm talking about no real mirror providers like that howto.cz page. These pages just copy the wowwiki mirror contents, having no own downloads - just presenting the user the same list of mirrors like wowwiki did before. These providers are listed on wowwiki as 'real' patch-provider which is probably not right. Please /discuss. Rovervr (talk) 10:18, 20 March 2009 (UTC)#

If they are actually just recaps of mirrors already posted, delete. That's what I do with mirrors that merely act as forwarders to uploaded.to, RapidShare, or some other stuff like that. There is no reason to have the same host linked multiple times, and absolutely no reason to have link-forwarders adding even more ads and possibly passwordstealers. Score (talk) 04:22, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
The howto.cz is up again. I'm going to remove it. ~bobalobabingbong Nympadora on the WoW Armory -=[ T + C + ! ]=- @15:14, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Numeric abuse

A valid point was raised recently on IRC, the abuse of numerical first-letter (intended or not, 0daypatch comes to mind). I propose we start treating the first character as a word, if it's a digit => One Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Nine Zero. A site named www.24-7.com would be treated as www.twofourseven.com.

Thoughts? Adys 21:47, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

see User_talk:Redzac and User_talk:Philson (and their contribs) to see some past history on that particular site. I don't think "intended or not" is accurate, it's quite definitely intended. Writing-out may be a somewhat convoluted rule, but it would disperse this particular instance of the site to the end. What happens when we see aaawowpatch.com tomorrow ? Score 13:24, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
As I said on IRC, aaawowpatch.com would get removed. Really obvious abuse will get you nowhere. Adys 13:40, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. Kirkburn  talk  contr 14:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

You crashed the whole patch mirrors site. On first place are mirrors that don’t work anymore. You changed links to wrong categories. Why you deleted 2 of 3 mirrors for client None → 2.3.0 (~3500 Mb)? Everything is broken. Nice work. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dimension (talk · contr).

I did a well needed cleanup, the sites I removed were broken/linkdead. Nothing is broken right now, what are you on about? Adys 19:58, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Nice work. I have just tried first link on you new list and the download is not working. Don`t know what you have been looking for. And why do you delete all 4Fansites links? They are all working well 4Fansites is not confusing. It is almost the same list like here with direct downloads. No Popups, no registrations, no waiting times. Don`t know why you like broken links better. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dimension (talk · contr).

I didn't delete them, I moved them. Did you read what is just above these lines? Adys 20:21, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

If you change links from one version to another, then your work is useless. Most of the links are wrong now, because the versions are wrong, due to your changes. You can’t just change a link from version 2.3 to 2.0. And then you bump broken links. If you want to help then make it correct next time. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dimension (talk · contr).

What the heck are you on about? Adys 21:28, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Bumping broken links and deleting working links and now you send warnings. Why do you move v2.3 client links to the 2.0 client list? Is this fun sending peoples to wrong sites? I dont know how many times I have to say that. Your moves are wrong. You can not just move links from 1 patch (or client) version to another patch version. The patch list is useless, if the links are at the wrong category. Still dont know why you do that. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dimension (talk · contr).

And I still dont know what you're on about. Links are fine here. Adys 22:15, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

OMG and peoples like you are admin. Check this link. http://www.4fansites.de/world_of_warcraft_client.php You know what it mean WoW Client None -> 2.3 ? It means that this is the client version 2.3 and not version 2.0. And now explain please why you moved this link from the WoW Client None -> 2.3 list to the None -> 2.0.0 list And this is not the only wrong move you made today. And please explain why you have deleted 4fansites at the 2.4.0 → 2.4.1 Incremental (~5Mb) list. You are deleting and moving links just for fun? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dimension (talk · contr).

OMG and you are still not banned. I have not deleted it, I've MOVED it. Once again, read up a few lines above, we won't be using 0123456789abc...z numbering, and instead counting the first digit as a word (zero one two three four...). Go ahead and move it, I'm honestly too lazy to check AGAIN what's going on; errors happen and the patch mirror page code is not one I mess with every day. But moving it to the TOP again will get you banned - it should get alphabetized as "fourfansites"... Adys 22:50, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

LOL this is too funny. Maybe you should ask one of your fellows what`s the difference between version numbers. Why don’t you make only 1 big list with all links, then you can chance links how you like. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dimension (talk · contr).

Both of you, get off each other's backs. Adys was correct in his moving, though he accidently removed one or two links that should have stayed. Is there any problem with the page as it is? And Dimension, please sign your posts. Kirkburn  talk  contr 07:47, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

I've tried to tidy it up further, and have unblocked Dimension. You both made mistakes. Kirkburn  talk  contr 08:04, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

The filefront mirrors contain nearly all the patches and are usually quite fast. Where downloading from blizzard and normal mirrors would net me around 100-200 k/s, I was hitting 700-800 k/s here. I'll reserve editing the main page to add them to another wiki-user who has a clue about what they are doing... Draeath 23:35, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

PTR patches

PTR patches seem fairly redundant for the majority of players, perhaps we should not list these, or give them their own page instead. Zurgat (talk) 08:42, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

EYe (talk) 03:56, 25 September 2008 (UTC) Hi I was wanted to add a few wow patches, but seem unable to do so. http://epicdl.com/index.php?page=dlf&id=200 2.4.2 --> 2.4.3 http://www.epicdl.com/index.php?page=dlf&id=202 2.4.1 --> 2.4.2 http://www.epicdl.com/index.php?page=dlf&id=201 2.4.0 --> 2.4.1 All are U.S.A mirrors.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

No 2.00 to 2.40 and 2.40 to 2.41

For some reason Zurgat decided that 2.40 -> 2.41 was "redundant" and decided to take it in his hands without posting in here that he did so. Zurgat, you DO realize that 2.00 -> 2.40 and 2.40 -> 2.41 is NEEDED if you're using the US version of WoW. You just delete the most downloaded patches of the Wiki. The 2.42 "Full patch" is ONLY for non-us version. Now I'm stuck here having to revert your edits. Next time make sure you post in here before completely deleting a section and make sure you READ all of what you're deleting. It even explains this in the installation tips.

CRC or SHA1 info on each patch

Would it be possible for people to add CRC or SHA1 info for each official patch as this would aid users when downloading patches to ensure that they haven't downloaded a modified patch or a patch containing a virus.

-—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hitsuji (talk · contr).

That's what the checksums line at the bottom of each table is for. --k_d3 23:36, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
That's precisely what I intended for the Checksums row -- it's not on wowwiki directly (would be quite a bit more work to get right, especially for the multifile-Mac-patches). None of these checksums can GUARANTEE what you want though, since I, too, am just a third party to Blizzard, and such could ostensibly fake those checksums. You can check the validity of the file using the .torrent file or the official downloader though (http://a.wirebrain.de/wow/#gchecksums mentions how), which is comparable to a straight SHA1 sum. 3.x.x parts are confusing

I'm confused by all the parts needed to get 3.0.x working on Tues Oct 14 from 2.4.3

  • 2.4.3 → 3.0.1 Incremental (~821-992 MiB)
  • 2.4.3 → 3.0.1 Incremental (~2256-2684 MiB)
  • 3.0.1 → 3.0.2 Incremental (~318-548 MiB)
  • 3.0.1 → 3.0.2 Part 3(~65 MiB)

Are all 4 of those files needed if you have a working copy of WoW on Monday Oct 13 and you want it working on Wed Oct 15? Whatever the answer, can the headings please be changed to make it clear please. Right now it looks like I have the option of a .9G file or 2.5G file but I'm guessing one of them is to bring an older CD version of WoW up to current version.--Brunpal (talk) 08:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

The 2.5 GiB patch is for CLASSIC --> Wrath. TeжubԎ Ҩ Ѡ 18:09, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Which means what exactly? Is it just for people who have basic WoW (ie no expansions)? When I think "Classic WoW" it could easily mean the basic install discs or it could mean, "No TBC. No expansion of any kind." The fact that it needs 2.4.3 (and not 1.x.x) as a starting place means those guesses are likely wrong. I say again, please clarify what "Classic" means and clarify which patches are needed to get WoW working on Wed from a working copy on Monday. Are all 4 files necessary?--Brunpal (talk) 21:03, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Classic indeed means no TBC, but patched to the latest version.
When Blizzard releases a large patch like this, it "stages" it by releasing parts believed to be stable early (eg. artwork) while deferring parts likely to change (eg. code) until the end. But people who wait until the last minute will also need the parts that were released earlier. For those who download the zip files, one needs one of each part. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don't use zips.) For those who use the official torrent (which I recommend, together with the uTorrent client), Blizzard includes in each torrent all the files from the previous part, so you only need the final torrent file. If you use the torrents and have already downloaded an earlier part, you're not downloading the old stuff again; the torrent will check what you already have and just download the new part, while uploading what you have to the cloud. -- ScratchMonkey (talk) 22:19, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Various Reasons Why People do not use the Torrent

  • They play WoW on dial up (yes, wow on dial up works) but dial up cannot handle a torrent.
  • They download patches using someone else's computer they cannot install torrent software onto, such as a library's.
  • They have bandwidth cap and a torrent is hard on bandwidth, especially the upload portion.
  • They pay per meg so a torrent is expensive.
  • Their ISP blocks ports used by torrents, or shapes traffic to make torrents useless.
  • The background downloader conflicts with other software.
  • They have multiple computers/accounts to run WoW and only want to download files once.

Take a guess which reason(s) apply to me. Having patch mirrors with direct downloads are very useful and important.--Brunpal (talk) 01:35, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Request to add 2.4.3-to-3.0.1 enUS Windows from FileFront

I noticed that there wasn't a link to FileFront for the 2.4.3 to 3.0.1 patch, so I went and scavenged around, and eventually found the file here: http://files.filefront.com/243+to+301+enUS+Winzip/;12059933;/fileinfo.html

I thought it'd be nice if I added this for people that rely on FileFront's fast downloads. AmmaT (talk) 00:08, 6 December 2008 (UTC)AmmaT

Requesting addition to Installation Tips

I've used the fastest route in the Installation Tips in the past as a means to install an up-to-date client quickly (e.g. after a Windows reinstall), but the route given isn't really the optimal one for all-expansion clients nowadays. Requesting this (or similar) be added:

  • The fastest path for installing an up-to-date client with all expansions is: WoW 2.0.0 -> TBC expansion -> WotLK expansion -> 3.0.2 -> 3.0.3.

There's probably a faster route still, but with the release of WotLK it makes the download of TBC-era patches redundant. - JonaxC (talk) 13:33, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Gamershell.com

I'm surprised that the domain gamershell.com isnt on the mirrors site when it clearly should be, here are a number of reasons.

You can choose from which continent to doanload from and has servers running at 1000Mb/s, therefore you can chose the one with the lowest capacity/highest speed. I get about 750+ kB/sec.

There is no need to type in any weird cat/dog things or Captchas things, you just click on patch...and wait.

Take a look at http://www.gamershell.com/patch_download_archive_W.html for what patches are offered, they even offer full client downloads. Although the official Blizzard ones are never slow.

Please add this as I noticed a lot of the domains used offer slow downloads for EU patches and some are outdated.

It's the first site I visit for any game patch not just Warcraft. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BobbyDazzler (talk · contr).

So fix it. If they've got mirrors, you're more than welcome to add them to the list just like any other site. Don't forget to sign your comments on talk pages by writing four tildes. (~~~~) --k_d3 00:06, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Request to Add Fileplanet Patch to Patch Mirrors List

Fileplanet hosts nearly available WoW Patch for all available languages. It has all patches with a universal patch to 2.4.0 -> 2.4.1 -> 2.4.2 -> 3.0.1 -> 3.0.1 -> 3.0.2 -> [[v3.0.3] -> 3.0.8 available at http://www.fileplanet.com/100462/0/section/Patches.

Fileplanet also has a bundle of patches that provides people a fast and simple way to update WoW for 10 Day trial users or after users reinstalling their World of Warcraft or The Burning Crusade install. That way you don't have search for several links and download several files. Fileplanet also adds new patches it to keep it up to date.

The one thing FilePlanet does not offer, however, is the ability to actually download any of the patches without first registering an account. All other mirrors allow this. I would think that people who have FilePlanet accounts already know that they can get Warcraft patches there. In addition to that, there are not really all that many volunteers adding links to sites they do not administer (I try to get around to the FileFront ones every now and then (after they get around to adding them to the site) since downloads are really just a click away, not a whole registration shebang, though). That having been said, I like the megapacks. Score (talk) 17:40, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
You make some good points about the reg but Fileplanet is like the primary unofficial Warcraft patch site. I've seen them have releases of major patches reserves available before they were other sites. Their WoW patch downloads links don't go dead and go back to v1.0.1 with multilanguage support. They have vanilla and The Burning Crusade patches for WoW which I am kinda surprised to see. I think the registration is just an email with password and age so it's super simple and took like a minute. Nearly every website or forums these days require some form of registration but i feel you about the reg. I'll try to email the Fileplanet editor to see if he will volunteer and link their files on Wowwiki. I talked to the editor who creates the Warcraft Patch download links and I'm pretty sure he'll do it. He probably be happy Wowwiki uses his link even at the bottom. --RCatFP (talk) 19:08, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I got an email from RCat and Fileplanet is ready support WoWWiki. Fileplanet can act as an archive source on WowWiki. Players can know the availability of new patches because Fileplanet gets to them very fast and constantly on WoW test realm. Other hosts can get it from us and spread the love for free. Registration requires only email(login ID), password, and age. The email doesn't have to be verified and process is like a login. I just have to learn wiki syntax. Ricecrispi cpham@ign.com --RicecrispiFileplanet (talk) 10:10, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it is a simple login, but it still is required (and will probably be used to send newsletters and such ;); personally I dislike it, but others may disagree. Since this is not my personal playground, it would probably be rather useful to have these links on the site for at least those people :-)

As for the Wiki Syntax : I'd suggest you try editing the Patch Mirrors page; The code is fairly self-explanatory. If you get it wrong, it'll be fixed, so don't worry about that too much (if it goes really, really wrong, it takes two clicks to revert to a previous version :-) I am usually the first to add a new patch to the site (and thus the table-construct, which is probably the most intimidating bit of code). If you look at the source code for the discussion page, you should see the skeleton for it right here :

If you are faster than me in confirming a new patch/mirror, just add the above to the top of the patch mirrors page, changing the version1, version2, and size parameter (if you know it; it can easily be added later). To add a mirror, simply put a line in between the Header and the bt=1 Row. An example would be

|-align="center" |align="left" |  a.wirebrain.de [1] |align="center" |US | - | GB | DE | FR | ES | RU | US | - | - | - | - | - | - | | banner

The name-parameter is the one shown in the leftmost column of the table. The link-parameter is an (optional) link to a generic landing-page chosen by the host, for FilePlanet it would usually be http://www.fileplanet.com/. The ads= parameter is a generic notice as to what the most intrusive ad/action required by the user is; You might want to put ads=registration, since that is the "most" annoying part ("least" annoying is a direct link to the file without any wait-time and hotlinkability and would be ads=-; a page for a specific file with a direct link without any advertisements would also get ads=-, though it is a bit more annoying. The next annoying bit would be a page for a file with a banner ad on it, which would get ads=banner. The next annoyance-level would be a page for the file OR a page with many files requiring at least a clickthrough (i.e. 2+ clicks to get to the actual download); if the clickthrough is time-based, it'll be ads=interstitial (for example, RapidShare and MegaUpload make you wait for at least a minute to get the file; some other sites queue you). On the same level for some is ads=layer, which will display a mandatory layer ad before getting to the file. And then there is ads=registration, which requires even more user action to get to the file. Some of these don't matter to some people (many people will already be logged in to FilePlanet, and many people also never see RapidShare interstitials since they have an account there; the assumption for the ads= line is that you are not registered and have not paid anything or done anything special).

The us, gb, de, fr, etc. lines just specify the links to the specific pages for that particular file. In the case of Wirebrain, I do not make one file per page, but group the links up per patch. As such they are the same for all of them; in the FilePlanet case, you would probably link to the specific file download page. the "m" suffix is for Mac OS X versions of the patches.

Patch mirrors are sorted in order of second-level domain by alphabet with numbers being converted into their alphanumeric equivalents (i.e. 0 = zero, 1 = one, 2 = two, etc. for the purposes of sorting).

The Checksums- and BitTorrent-rows are usually filled by me once I get the patch through the checksummer on wirebrain; so far, that has worked out ok.

As for obtaining the patches; FilePlanet does get most of them rather quickly, correct -- especially "special" ones like a .exe version for patches that are distributed as background-downloaded multiple parts with the regular game client. However, we usually get at least some mirrors up even before the realms go down (if Blizzard has put them on their distribution network by then). The nice thing about those is that it is easy to verify their validity with the Blizzard BitTorrent tracker.

In any case, if you have questions, feel free to pose them here or on my talk-page (or link me here on my talk-page, since I will probably be reading that more often than this discussion-page). There are usually also helpful people available on #wowwiki on OpenProjects/FreeNode.Score (talk) 19:01, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

MiBs?

I have never seen Megabyte spelled MiB. Reminds me of Men in Black. I have always seen it spelled MB or said as Meg. Unless this is something different. Rolandius (talk - contr) 06:45, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Megabyte is MB. Mebibyte (MiB) is the proper unit to use for computer storage. TeжubԎ Ҩ Ѡ 07:02, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh I see. I am unfamiliar with the term MiB I guess. Rolandius (talk - contr) 07:05, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Probably not your fault; you can thank marketing-people for that. Kilobyte and Megabyte have been (wrongly) used as declarations for 2^X-based units for quite a while, since 1024 is pretty damn close to 1000. Once you get

into the tera-range though, it becomes quite hard to swallow that 1099511627776 should be anywhere close to 1000000000000. Hard Disk manufacturers just use the correct metric term and will sell you a harddrive with one terabyte capacity = 1000000000000 Bytes. Windows, on the contrary, will tell you that the drive you just purchased only offers you 931 gigabytes of capacity. Maybe somebody should write them a memo; mega, giga, tera, peta etc. are SI-prefixes with a well-defined meaning (i.e. multiples of 10^x). Hell, in the exact same operating system, you get network adapters with 100mbit/s or 1gbit/s, which is indeed 10^x; However when looking at RAM, you see megabit used as 2^y. No wonder everybody is confused. Mebibit is the correct term for multiples of 2^20; the shorthand for that is MiB. This has been true since at least 1998 : http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html . Some people still vehemently try to claim otherwise. It usually is no use arguing with those people. Number names

I thought it was decided that if a sites name began with a number, it would be ordered as if the number were spelled out. Has this changed, as all the number ones were moved to the bottom of the list. ~bobalobabingbong Nympadora on the WoW Armory -=[ T + C + ! ]=- @ 16:27, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Mac mirror for 3.1.2-3.1.3

Arakkoa has the patch, you can do a simple search to find other languages for 3.1.2-3.1.3.

enUS http://www.arakkoa.com/details.php?file=377

esMX http://www.arakkoa.com/details.php?file=378

This is all that has been mirrored so far, but other sites like macgamefiles may have more languages, or at least these two. Sorry that I had to add a section for this, I just joined and wanted it fixed.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Taior3 (talk · contr).
