Anecdotes

Anecdotal experience: I have attempted this quest several times. Most of the times we engaged the mobs close to their spawn point. The named mob (the Harbinger) would appear, and if we did not engage it immediately (say, by a hunter trap), it would disappear immediately. Even when engaged immediately, when it was killed, the quest failed to continue.

The times I completed the quest (05/03/2007, post "patches"), we allowed the mobs to approach fairly close to the Guardian. The Harbinger spawned and walked towards the Guardian. The Guardian started walking a little towards the Harbinger. We slew the Harbinger. The Guardian approached the body, sent a lightning bolt into it, then 'died'. The quest completed successfully.
