Basically it's a retcon. In the book Day of the Dragon (released in 2001, prior to Warcraft III), which deals with the freeing of Alexstrasza, the Dark Portal is still intact and the Dragonmaw clan is uncaptured... while in Beyond the Dark Portal the Dragonqueen has already been freed and the Dark Portal itself is destroyed at the end of the game. The matter arose with the WC III Manual setting the battle of Grim Batol after BtDP and such a major mistake has been repeated since.
