My bot

You should probably mark my bot accordingly. I bring it with me to every wiki I visit. It's name is TheSeeker. It just took care of the transclutions of a deleted template.__Neo(T) 01:24, January 10, 2010 (UTC)

Heya - the help is certainly appreciated, but in general we don't mark bots too quickly for people new to the wiki - it is of course nothing personal, but since it hides the changes from the RC list, it can be a little dangerous if the bot does something unexpected. Are you planning on coming to the site frequently, or just as general help around Wikia (either of which are great)? Kirkburn  talk  contr 10:20, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
Just general Wikia help. I actually know nothing about WoW.__Neo(T) 00:46, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
That's okay - how often is it likely to visit? Kirkburn  talk  contr 10:08, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
I'd say probably once a week. I periodically check each wiki I use and I usually run the bot to do cleanups while I'm online. I haven't run it again because I had some issues with it recently, but I finally got it fixed up. It's a big help to have one around, plus you can always see his edits by checking show bot edits, and I always monitor him as I run him in case there's any issues.__Neo(T) 21:23, January 13, 2010 (UTC)

Toasted images

Wikia seems to have mislaid some of our image files. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 21:59, January 14, 2010 (UTC)

Welcoming

Hey, I hope you don't mind, but I'm setting your username as one of the ones for the bot to sign with when it welcomes people. I don't need 'em comin' to me about stuff :P

Yes, it does welcomes. I can make it put the {{subst:Welcome}} and then sign with a username. But anyways, just wanted to give you a heads up.__Neo(T) 01:04, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

...We (and most other Wikia) already have a bot to do that, thanks for the offer though. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:05, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
I know. It's not perfect, though. I've had it screw up more than once.__Neo(T) 01:15, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
Screw up how? --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:19, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Not really a big deal. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:26, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't think we really need a welcoming bot - Wikia's is fine (and I'd rather fix that if it has issues ... being a Wikia employee and all :) Kirkburn  talk  contr 12:53, January 18, 2010 (UTC)

'wikia' wikis

A comment on SWM's talk page got me looking at foreign language wikis and 'translation links'. (Perhaps you could expand on the issue there?)

First time thinking of it, and had to search to find where we mention wikis in other languages. Added a comment to that page to the effect of "this looks specifically like an endorsement of wikia, against NPOV". Even if wikia hosts the vast majority of wikis, even if we ourselves are hosted by wikia, I don't think we should be in the business of promoting wikia as 'better' than other wikis. Which is precisely how I feel the page presents non-wikia wikis.

Yes, this results from changes 2 full years old (your 5-6 July 2007 changes). But even so.

I would like to emphasize that it took me a bit of searching to find the link to that page. Any chance we could make it more visible in some fashion? --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 22:57, March 23, 2010 (UTC)

suggestion for problem reports

I don't know if Wikia has entertained tweaks to the system or not, but it might be a good idea to consider enabling the ability to review and mark problem reports as a user right. Something like "Problem report reviewer". That would seem a technical tweak, but I think it would aid in increasing its usability for any given wiki. --Sky (t · c · w) 17:46, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

I approve this idea =) SnakeSssssssssssssssssssssssss Coobra sig3For Pony! (Sssss/Slithered) 18:03, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Interesting thought, I'll ask around. Kirkburn  talk  contr 19:10, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

TreyAlliance6

IP address collision. Apparrently TreyAlliance6 and I are listed on the same IP for some reason. There's no relation between us. The blocked IP was 10.8.2.112. Note that I am not alone. It seems like a networking IP mask issue of some sort. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 22:01, May 18, 2010 (UTC)

... And it clears itself up again. This has happened to me before, and is getting to be a non-trivial annoyance. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 22:03, May 18, 2010 (UTC)
Considering that IP address is not a public IP, this is probably a Wikia caching issue. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 23:11, May 18, 2010 (UTC)
I'm now experiencing the same issue. Interestingly, it has only recently begun affecting me; I was able to edit articles up until about ten minutes or so ago. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 23:43, May 18, 2010 (UTC)
And now it's fixed. Hopefully whatever PCJ did in changing the block settings will fix this issue. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 23:53, May 18, 2010 (UTC)

2 things for our lord [of Wikia]

  1. Would it be possible to have WW and WT mapped to Project and Project talk using http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgNamespaceAliases ? I'm pretty sure there's a maintenance script to run too, in case Wikia isn't in the habit of fulfilling this request [but I could be wrong].
  2. Would someone kindly poke whoever made CategorySelect and the WYSIWYG extension? It bothers me when editing to see categories scrunched up at the bottom of an article; as well, it also bothers me that interwikis are placed automatically above categories, when interwiki links are less pertinent in the day-to-day for this specific wiki (having external links -> templates -> categories -> interwikis is how the big wikis do it). Can the regex, or whatever causes the difference from, say, Wikipedia, be changed? This one I realize is a non-project relevant thing, but it does so bother me.

I beseech thee! --Sky (t · c) 06:32, June 1, 2010 (UTC)

I'll ask about them :) Kirkburn  talk  contr 18:22, June 1, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, another thing popped into my head that I didn't remember to add here. The automatic "pick your license" inserts a colon after Licensing inside the h2 header, which I believe to be completely unneeded (and completely against custom). Remove plx? :) --Sky (t · c) 20:32, June 1, 2010 (UTC)

Quick responses: I've put in a request about the namespace thing. Category issue is a technical problem, no easy solution. I've edited the license header in the Wikia-wide message to remove the colon. Kirkburn  talk  contr 23:13, June 1, 2010 (UTC)
Thank you m'lord. SnakeSssssssssssssssssssssssss Coobra sig3For Pony! (Sssss/Slithered) 23:15, June 1, 2010 (UTC
Licensing is still including the colon.[1] --Sky (t · c) 01:51, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

An additional request: Is it possible to get a confirmation box for the Rollback button? I can't tell you how many times I've clicked it on accident and then had to go back and undo it. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 04:37, June 3, 2010 (UTC)

The whole point of rollback is it is one-click. If you don't want the rollback feature, we can remove your patroller permission. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 05:06, June 3, 2010 (UTC)
Another possibility is I could write some custom JS for you to use that will give you the confirmation you desire. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 05:25, June 3, 2010 (UTC)
I thought the point was that you use it when someone's made a bunch of bad edits preventing you from undoing a single change to revert it. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 06:07, June 3, 2010 (UTC)
How does that relate to your problem? -_- --Sky (t · c) 07:59, June 3, 2010 (UTC)
Unlikely we'd add a confirmation button, but improving the location of the link (in such a way that you're less likely to accidentally click it) is more possible. Can't promise anything though. Kirkburn  talk  contr 15:53, June 3, 2010 (UTC)
Meanwhile, Dark T, you can use the following CSS to hide the rollback link on Special:RecentChanges (the link will still be available elsewhere):
.page-Special_RecentChanges .mw-rollback-link{ display:none; }

Caption Contest?

Just a small idea/suggestion, but maybe we could have like a monthly caption contest. Just smack a funny-ish looking picture on the main page of the wikia, and let see what people come up with. Winner gets a little picture to slap on their user page maybe? Tanooki1432 (talk) 22:36, June 3, 2010 (UTC)

Bug report, I think

What's up with the <dt>s and the <br /s>?[2] I fairly certain that this isn't the user's fault… --Sky (t · c) 16:29, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Possibly another one: I believe I'm seeing pages labeled "Talk:Talk:Boilerplate:Quest" in the following search, but it's impossible to access the page (because of the double 'talk', I assume).[3] Is that just me? There are a couple other such pages, so if a db search or something of the sort could be run and those also deleted, that would be sweet.

Of course, if it's just in my head… you know what to do. --Sky (t · c) 02:25, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

For the first: I think it's unlikely to be something on our end - the new editor isn't live here, so I have no idea what could interact in such a fashion.
On the second, I'll let uberfuzzy know - he often deals with that stuff. Kirkburn  talk  contr 09:58, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
K, I'll go poke the editor in question to see if he had a hand in it. --Sky (t · c) 16:50, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Facebook Connect

The Facebook connect app doesn't work for WoWWiki. I don't know if this is a limitation of FB's app API; nevertheless, here's the error message.

''Invalid Argument''

The Facebook Connect cross-domain receiver URL (http://static.ak.fbcdn.net/connect/xd_proxy.php#?=&cb=f30acc0ec874a38&origin=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowwiki.com%2Ff9acc727744b6&relation=opener&transport=postmessage&frame=f247db5eda9d808&result=xxRESULTTOKENxx) must be in the same domain or be in a subdomain of an application's base domain (wikia.com). You can configure the base domain in the application's settings.

Edit: I had to use a different Wikia site (finalfantasy.wikia.com to be exact) to make it work.

Cataclysm beta images

I appreciate that you upload images from Cataclysm to the wiki, but refrain from making them have generic file names. See WoWWiki image naming policy. --g0urra[T҂C] 17:02, July 15, 2010 (UTC)

They don't have generic names. They have the zone name, some have the subzone, my name, the build number and the date/time taken. I'm not planning on writing custom names for 500 screenshots, but I am dropping the date and time for the next bunch. Kirkburn  talk  contr 17:05, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
And that's what I call generic. For example File:New Thalanaar under attack.jpg used to have the name "Feralas 071010 011053 - New Thalanaar - Kirkburn 12319.jpg", and File:Ironforge 071310 001945 - Kirkburn 12319.jpg could probably be renamed to something such as "Ironforge Council.jpg". --g0urra[T҂C] 17:11, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
Okay, on further thought, I'll try and sort out names more like this: [Zone] - [Subzone/description] for future ones. I just wanted to get the screenshots online at first - renaming screenshots is a bit of a chore. Kirkburn  talk  contr 17:16, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
I understand, then. I guess that leaves it to us "mortals" to properly rename the file names. --g0urra[T҂C] 17:18, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do about the older ones too - apologies if I've caused people more work. Kirkburn  talk  contr 17:20, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, you once told a wowwikian that "putting your names on wiki images is against the spirit of a wiki.", thought I'd mention it. TherasTaneel (talk) 17:21, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, you're now making me wonder why I thought anything other than the zone and subzone was important for the filename. I think it was along the lines of "it's beta, I must therefore make it different". D'oh at myself. Kirkburn  talk  contr 17:24, July 15, 2010 (UTC)

Monaco.css

Hi there!

I am C_ee_X, user and administrator on the Burnout Wiki. I come to you for help as indeed I am currently redesigning my wiki's skin.

I'm having difficulty editing the style of my .accent class. I know it governs -among others- the usermasthead accent, the Latest Activity sub-title line (the line with the article count) (funnily enough) and the "summary bar" under the editing section (the bar with the "Save Page" "Preview" and other buttons...)

I do not know which classes govern them individually, my ultimate aim is set different styles for each. I also come to you because I can see that those elements I wish to change are different from one another here.

Can you help? Thank you vey much in advance! -- {{SUBST:C_ee_X|}} 12:42, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

Have you had a look through http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Customizing_colors ... there's a collection of more advanced pages linked at the bottom which may be able to help. If you're a Firefox user, I recommend the Firebug extension, which should help you identify the specific classes in use (use the "inspect" feature). It should be possible, as everything generally has fairly specific classes you can use. Otherwise, Special:Contact may be better able to point you in the right direction. Kirkburn  talk  contr 15:52, July 20, 2010 (UTC)
Wow, such a powerful extension!! That is exaclty the tool I needed, I found the class in no-time! Thank you very much for the help KB and good luck to you here on WoWWiki! -- {{SUBST:C_ee_X|}} 18:00, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for taking the time to create the tooltips and put up a version that is easily shared. I work on the Dragon Age Wiki and I've started to use your tooltips. I still have problems in IE where the tooltip underlaps the ads. I tried using increasing z-index and adding !important, but, it seems that in IE, the ads still take precedence.

Ownership of the wowwiki.com domain name

Been referred to the "lets move wowwiki" forum topic, and one of the things there was "wowwiki.com is not for sale", by wikia personnel. I looked up the whois information, and all I see is the godaddy registrar. No contact addresses of any sort. Pcj directed me to a wowiki/about page that mentioned that Rustak was the (or one of the) originators of wowwiki.

So my questions are: Was Rustak (well, the RL person behind Rustak) the original owner of the domain name? Does Wikia actually OWN the wowwiki.com domain name? (Likely answer: yes.) Was transfer of title to the domain name required by wikia for them to host us? (My guess is: yes.)

It amuses me no end to see that while Wikia wanted to move us to a subdomain, they now don't want to surrender the original domain name. If they had moved us to a subdomain, what would they have done with wowiki.com? Made it a redirect? --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 21:33, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, a redirect - the URL would never have been killed. Kirkburn  talk  contr 22:01, October 13, 2010 (UTC)
However, WoWWiki, which was around before being moved to Wikia, is not owned by Wikia. WoWWiki could legally acquire the domain name from Wikia. At least that's how I understand it, I could be wrong. —EGingell (T|C|F) Treader of Cenarion Circle 22:48, October 13, 2010 (UTC)
