A Thane is a clan leader, lord, king, etcetera of dwarves.

Thanes in the Warcraft Universe

In Warcraft 3 the Mountain Kings were thanes. In WoW thanes, explained by a Wildhammer NPC in Aerei Peak, are individual leaders of the many dwarf clans (much like pandaren Shodo-pan), while they all hail to the High Thane, the king. The high thanes in WoW include King Magni Bronzebeard of the Bronzebeard Dwarves, High Thane Falstad Wildhammer of the Aerei Peak Dwarves (Wildhammer), and Emperor Dagran Thaurissan, a descendent of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan. It is also possible that the Earthen had thanes, and if Uldum ever opens as an instance or just a city, then we will probably find out.
