"Hey, you! Catch!"

Overview

Ability Throw

Description: Hurl a thrown weapon at the target.

Classes: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue.

Require: Thrown weapon.

Proficiency

All rogues and troll warriors have thrown weapon proficiency when they are created.

Hunters and all other warriors can learn to use thrown weapons from the weapon master who teaches it.

Thrown weapons are either throwing knives or throwing axes. The thrown weapon proficiency covers both, and there is generally no difference, two identical items with different icons and names will be sold side by side.

For example:

Some of the better thrown weapons will be either a knife or an axe, not both.

Use

Thrown weapons are thrown using the throwing skill. That is not merely a tautology, the throwing ranged weapon skill used is distinct from the skill for all other ranged weapons which are shot. In the user interface, different icons are used for throwing and shooting. Abilities that work with shooting do not work with throwing, and abilities that work with throwing do not work with shooting.

This distinction is most important for hunters, because autoshot does not work with thrown weapons, all throws are manually initiated, and the many hunter abilities that work with shoot do not work with throw. Hunters do not often choose to throw.

Rogues and warriors do not have autoshot, and all their throws and shots are manually initiated. Rogues and warriors do not have abilities that require shooting. Rogues have a Inv throwingknife 06 [Deadly Throw] finishing move ability that requires a thrown weapon. Warriors have Ability warrior shatteringthrow [Shattering Throw] wich acts like Spell arcane massdispel [Mass Dispel], removing all immunity buffs. (Spell frost frost [Ice Block], Bubble

Thrown weapons do less damage than shot weapons of the same level. Also weapons which are shot can be augmented with scopes and get a damage bonus from their ammo. On the other hand, thrown weapons are generally faster than shot weapons, and a rogue or warrior player who has to manually shoot may find that a second throw is possible while a mob is closing.

Thrown weapons are adequate for pulling, which is primarily for getting a mob's attention. Rogues and warriors do most of their damage through melee, not ranged attacks, lacking the shooting based mob control abilities, pet, and traps that enable a hunter to rely on ranged attacks.

Thrown weapons with stat bonuses are available at a lower level than other (non-wand) shot weapons with stat bonuses. Since rogues and warriors focus on melee, they will often favor a thrown weapon with a stat bonus in the ranged slot.

Tips

Level 19 twink rogues and warriors will often carry either [Throat Piercers] or [Thick Bronze Darts].
