Unholy Embrace is the Death Knight's "signature ability", almost the antithesis of the paladin's Divine Shield.

Functionality

Unholy Embrace appears to be the Death Knight's ultimate weapon in PvP. It converts healing done to an enemy into damage, so it can prevent healers from doing any healing on them for 6 seconds (for risk of having their heals actually kill their target). This can also be helpful in PvE to prevent enemy NPCs from healing and do more damage. After a target has been afflicted with Unholy Embrace, it cannot be recast on them for one minute - similar to the cooldown for the paladin's Divine Shield.

Possible Spell Origins

The Deathknight in Naxxramas utilized an ability that Unholy Embrace is highly reminiscent of:

Curse - Deathknights place a curse on their target which renders them immune to direct healing spells. However, Heal over Time spells and Power Word: Shield can still be used on the victim. Mages and Druids should remove this curse as soon as possible..

Unholy Embrace seems to be an empowered version of the same ability. This also seems to indicate it will be a curse, and therefore (unlike its "antithesis" Divine Shield) might be able to be easily removed by a Mage or Druid who acts quickly.

Notes

The Rune system was not functioning during BlizzCon, and mana was displayed as a placeholder instead.
