History

I've been a computer gamer ever since I could press a key on a keyboard or hold a joystick in my hand. I started with the good old Commodore 64 in the '80s, advanced to PC in the early nineties and played literally thousands of games! My favorite genres have always been adventures and role-playing games, but I would never say no to any GOOD game. However, World of Warcraft is my first MMORPG since I was on dial-up until 2005. ADSL opened up some new possibilities and this is a brief description of the character I play in this game.

I did some research on classes in World of Warcraft before my copy of the game arrived. I talked to some of my US friends who were already playing the game and they all pointed me into playing a rogue! What I wanted was a class that can kill but is also able to do some self healing when necessary so I almost picked a paladin. Don't laugh now, I was a rookie at that time! There were times when I was sorry I didn't pick a druid since even now I think that class would fit me the best, but at that time druid wasn't appealing at all. Anyway, I picked a rogue and I must admit that I still enjoy that class the most. I made several alts later, most of them are max leveled but rogue is simply number one. Forever.

Why Night Elf? A friend of mine started a few days before me, he played a Night Elf hunter. He told me to start at Teldrassil simply because we could help each ther. "The other starting zones are so far away that you will need days to get to me!". Yeah, I know. We were amateurs! But I never regreted it. I never liked gnomes, humans are too "normal" and dwarves... I like dwarves but not as rogues!

After the initial 30 minutes of play, after learning the game mechanics and completing the first few quests, I joined:

<Drachen von Azeroth>

Joined: 16.05.2005.

Officer. This was a casual, real-life friends' guild, from start of the game until I leveled up to 55. DvA disbanded as members reached level 60 and joined raiding guilds. At this time I had no idea what raiding is, I never even heard of Molten Core and I thought World of Warcraft ends on level 60!

<Enemy of the Horde>

Joined: 21.08.2005.

Joined as member, advanced to the rank of Officer. As the fastest growing guild on the realm at that time, EotH gathered 300+ players and prepared to raid Molten Core. I leveled up to 60 as member of EotH. Since quantity did not mean quality, the guild soon split in two - <The Goodfellas> that gathered "the elite" and <Enemy of the Horde> for <60 and casual players.

<The Goodfellas>

Joined: 20.09.2005.

Officer, since The Goodfellas was made from Enemy of the Horde. The guild was serious about raiding Molten Core but failed to make any notable progress. It soon collapsed and its members joined other realm guilds. Too bad, this guild had a great potential but failed to achieve much.

<Divinus>

Created: 15.10.2005.

Guild Master. After a few disappointments with previous guilds and recent interest in PVP, I formed a guild that mainly focused on Battlegrounds. The guild grew fast, had a lot of success in Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin and soon decided to start some PVE raiding. Zul'Gurub sounded like a good start, but lack of interest asked for alliance with other guilds for PVE raiding. Soon PVP and PVE conflicted and Divinus started failing on both fronts.

<GodIike>

Joined: 29.11.2005.

Joined as member, advanced to the rank of Officer and later to the occasional Guild Master. The Elite PVP guild. After the failure of Divinus in November 2005, I joined the PVP masters of Ragnaros - the mighty GodIike! Already having a rank of Marshal, I managed to finalize the rank race on 23.02.2006. after months of ruthless PVP combat. In the same time, GodIike, under the leadership of Angeles, successfully raided Molten Core, Onyxia's Lair and Blackwing Lair. After the summer and opening of the Ahn'Qiraj gates, GodIike started raids in two new 20 and 40 men dungeons. We managed to kill all but C'thun in Ahn'Qiraj, but failed to raid Naxxramas at all.

<Syndicate>

Joined: 27.05.2007.

The situation in GodIike got bad and after a few months of absence (busy with getting married and moving to a new place!) from the game, I left the guild (followed the other 80% of other guild members). After 19 months of being a part of the mighty GodIike, it was time to move on. Syndicate was a logical selection, the most suitable guild on server. Syndicate was about to start serious raiding at Magtheridon's Lair and Serpenshrine Cavern and I was more than happy to help!

Shortly after joining I became an officer and rogue leader. We managed to clear Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep after a long campaign, then moved straight into Battle of Mount Hyjal and Black Temple which took much less time. At that time we were 6th guild on realm and things looked very well and promising for the upcoming Sunwell Plateau.

Preferences

I am mainly a combat sword rogue, but also a big fan of hemorrhage with mace or a sword as the main hand weapon. I prefer swords/maces/fists (in that order) over daggers overall.

I joined GodIike right before the first Ragnaros kill so I never experienced the excitement of clearing the fire instance as most other people did. However, Blackwing Lair was more than exciting. When we first entered the instance and saw Razorgore we thought he was unkillable. Especially after the initial few wipes and observing all those mobs running around, killing the guild that had no trouble with Ragnaros and his minions!

45 days later we cleared the instance and thought nothing could stop us. Our storm through the instance was noted on the server as we did it in the record short time. We joined the server-wide epic quest to open the gates of Ahn'Qiraj and looked forward to the new instance.

Then the summer came... And raids stopped. It was really hard to get enough people online for serious raiding in Ahn'Qiraj. We spent a LOT of time trying to reach C'thun and when we finally did - we failed at killing him. We were simply unable to create a raid that would clear the instance, once and for all. We could get to him in one night and then simply fail at killing him before the reset. After a few weeks of futile tries, we turned over to Naxxramas. Needless to say, the overall morale of the guild members was simply too low to deal with the superior creatures of the Scourge.

Once the expansion was released on 16.01.2007. I had a clear goal - reach level 70. I decided to do it slowly, to enjoy the content of the "new world". Unfortunately, my guild and non-guild mates were all in rush for some reason. By the time I reached level 64 most of them were already done and were getting attuned to Karazhan. In the same time I was preparing for the epic journey - getting married! I was on a crossroad - I didn't know how active I could be in WoW any more, what would I do and when I could play. I decided to get to level 70, get attuned to Karazhan and see what happens. During that time I managed to clear most of Karazhan with my dear GodIike. The raids were not as successful as expected but it could have been worse.

March 2007. Preparations for wedding and moving to our new place were under way. I stopped active playing until it was all over, simply had no time for everything. When I got back in May 2007 I was shocked - GodIike was falling apart! The guild I loved the most was no longer the guild I knew. It was time to move on, but I still wasn't sure about what I would be doing in the game. I left GodIike after 19 months of active membership.

Syndicate approached me. The only guild I liked, aside from GodIike. I was offered a membership "with no questions asked". I was still unsure about my future role in World of Warcraft and I openly told that to the officers in Syndicate. They didn't care much, they would let me join the guild and take my time to see if I can raid or not. I started slowly with some Karazhan raids while the guild was focused on killing Magtheridon.

Magtheridon died quickly and the gates of Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep were opened. Hydross, The Lurker, Void Reaver... fell one after another but it took some time before both Lady Vashj and Kael'Thas were dead. The journey through these 2 instances was long and hard, we faced many obstacles in dungeons but also in our own ranks. Many of our members couldn't take the pressure and gave up, but we, the leaders, did not! We got the vials that were needed to gain permission to take part in The Battle of Mount Hyjal and continued our epic journey in The Caverns of Time and Black Temple. I feel obliged to give a special credit to our Raid leader and Guild master at that time, Warlock Abraxus, for superior leadership and will to keep raiding until it was finally complete. Great achievements should never be forgotten and ignored.

Hyjal and Illidan's lair wasn't nearly as difficult as we expected. After a really long campaign with Vashj and Kael'Thas we needed something like this. Both these dungeons were completely cleared and we had enough time to gear ourselves up while waiting for the summer.

Memorable Gear/Loot

During the adventures in World of Warcraft I've seen a LOT of items. I've changed a lot of gear and weapons, most of it never lasted long and was replaced by better. However, some items have been very dear to me and I'd like to mention them in this section. I will mention only the VERY special gear, not the best or coolest as some other players might.

World of Warcraft Classic

  • [Stormstrike Hammer] My first real weapon! During my long campaign in Warcraft battlegrounds I used this wonderful mace (in combination with [Julie's Dagger]) for months! I bought it in September 2005 and replaced it with Brutality Blade in January 2006! It did wonders with mace specialization, those extra stuns were very efficient and quite satisfying. As for the dagger, I got it while questing in Felwood - it dropped off from one of the Satyr's in the northern area.

  • [Seal of Ascension] Say what you want, but this is a real epic loot! The "key" to Upper Blackrock Spire is rare as it required a lot of visits to the Lower part of the dungeon and a lot of luck. Another one of the items I will never get rid of.

  • [The Lobotomizer] Ah, the good old Lobo! The only real reason why I farmed Alterac Valley reputation like a maniac. It took me one month to get to exalted from revered (entire October 2005, as this was the time of server-only battlegrounds and reputation gains were very, very slow) but it was well worth it. I am not big fan of daggers in general, but I always loved this dagger and I still have it in my bank - safely stored for eternity!

  • [Black War Tiger] The original reason for PVP rank farming. I thought I would never collect enough gold to purchase the mount, so I started a campaign with a clear goal - achieve rank 11 and get the epic mount for free. I never purchased any of the "regular" race mounts after I got this. After I got this mount I decided to go on with the ranks and actually go to the very top and get all those amazing weapons as well!

  • [Highlander's Leather Shoulders] I honestly do not remember when I got these (or when I got exalted with League of Arathor). They were every leather-wearing character's dream come true! Huge armor, bonus stamina and agility as well as extra attack power! I used it throughout the entire Classic campaign (for PVP) and replaced it while leveling in Outland.

  • [Grand Marshal's Right Hand Blade] and [Grand Marshal's Left Hand Blade] Right after getting the final rank of Grand Marshal I bought ALL the available weapons and enchanted them. But these two were special. For no special reason I picked them over all other weapons and actually used them for almost one full year! I guess I wanted to be a bit different since most other rogues used daggers or swords, so I picked fist weapons. They are stored in the bank, right next to the entire Grand Marshal set of weapons and armor.

  • [Brutality Blade] Before joining GodIike I spent 80% of my time in battlegrounds and 20% completing the remaining quests from the quest log. I didn't care much for any of the end-game content. Molten Core seemed like a place I will never enter since, at that time, only 2 or 3 guilds were actually doing something in it. But after joining the guild that actually raided something, I had my eyes set to just ONE thing and it was this sword. I wasn't sure if I would survive the pressure of non-stop honor farming and if I'd quit the race to Rank 14, so this weapon seemed like a wonderful replacement for Grand Marshal weapons I might never get. I was incredibly lucky as it dropped on my very first visit to Molten Core!

  • [Drake Fang Talisman] This trinket has a special place in my heart, seriously. We farmed Blackwing Lair for months and it never dropped. At first I wasn't too interested in it, there were people in the guild who wanted this more than anything in the world. I didn't want to ruin their dreams, I was more than happy to pass the loot for them... but it refused to drop. Much later in the game, when we had a hard time with getting enough people to form a raid, it finally dropped and none of those who really really wanted it were there. I took it and, believe it or not, used it 24/7 for TWO full years! I replaced it in April 2008 with [Madness of the Betrayer] but I will never sell or destroy it. It's a relic from the past, a friendly companion who was with me for a long, long time.

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade

  • [Warglaive of Azzinoth] What to say... Most guilds do not even raid during summertime, but somehow we managed to put up a decent raid and tried to have fun. The raid on monday didn't even seem possible at one point, but as soon as we had both "fire tanks" online we went to Illidan't fortress. We didn't even get to him in the last 45 days or so, but with our great fresh recruits we made it possible on this legendary week. Illidan put up a good fight but had to lay down his weapons at the end of the night... literally! He dropped one of the Glaives and a dagger, along with the usual Tier 6 tokens, starting a mass whisper party on our entire guild! Thank you <Syndicate> for making this a memorable evening! And special thank to Niny of <Fatalis> for offering and enchanting a free Mongoose enchant on this beauty!

  • [Warglaive of Azzinoth (off hand)] After getting the first glaive, I've become kinda obsessed with a single piece of loot! For the first time after the neverending race to the rank of Grand Marshal, I've been excited about getting something. And it didn't take long - it was one of those strange raids where we managed to kill all bosses but with some big problems and a lot of recovery skills. My special thanks to the entire <Syndicate> guild for helping me get these two beauties!
