The people of Southshore waited in dread, knowing they were likely about to die, as two vast armies of undead advanced towards them. The strongest defenders of the remains of Lordaeron had already been vanquished in battle, and yet the Scourge machine of war was barely dented. With just a few hundred guards left to protect the town the people were in panic, many selling all their possessions and fighting one another for the last few places on the ferry to Khaz Modan. But there were still many left stranded, and with over two hundred of the enemy for every one of them, the suicide rate soared.
The first assault began at midnight, on the eve of Winter's Veil. Waves of ghouls poured down on the defenders, slavering at the fresh meat offered. Many on both sides were destroyed, but in the end the humans stood their ground. But over half of them had been killed in those first few minutes, and Marcus Redpath, the commander of all Alliance forces on the subcontinent, saw little hope that they would withstand much longer.
A few hours before dawn the abominations, which had proved so effective at Ambermill, were unleashed. Unstoppable masses of rotting flesh, they punched right through the defenders and allowed the lesser undead to surround the remains of the small army. More appeared over the nearby hills, flanking them. Those last few defenders fought desperately for their lives, yet ultimately they were overwhelmed. More and more ghouls were fighting to get near them, and eventually Marshal Redpath himself was knocked to the ground and ended.
But with his last sight he saw on the horizon to the south a mighty armada, flying the flag of the Alliance. And so he died, knowing that he would be avenged.
When the reinforcements from Stormwind landed at the Southshore docks they saw a handful of badly wounded guards doing their best to hold back the undead, but despite their efforts Southshore was overrun. The new forces gladly charged in, relieving the guards and driving the Scourge back from Southshore. Surprised by these fresh soldiers and by the cannon blasts from mighty battleships ploughing deep into their army, the undead had no choice but to retreat to a position far from the coast.
