After Ambermill the next human settlement was the township of Hillsbrad, several miles to the east. The people there had not had much warning, and indeed knew nothing of the Scourge until survivors came running from the ashes of Ambermill. To give the people time to evacuate it was decided to block the road as it passed between the hills, but the only fighters of any skill were a group of ten paladins, friends on a pilgramage to Uther's Tomb who had had the misfortune to stop by Hillsbrad for the night.
Nevertheless they, along with some warriors hastily conscripted from the local farmers, set out to meet the undead threat head on. Fearlessly they gazed down at the seething mass of corpses climbing towards them, and it was out of necessity that they prayed to the Light to aid them in this battle. The first undead to reach them were vapourised by the holy magic, and those that pushed through were decapitated by bright swords or crushed by the might of a warhammer. But in the end it was no use, and the ten were forced to retreat before they were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers.
Yet they had held the Scourge back for long enough to let the civilians escape to Southshore. And with the refugees was a messenger, bringing news of the defeats to Stormwind so that an army might arrive to save what remained.
