Setting the Stage...

  • Twenty-five thousand years before the First War, Sargeras, former Champion of the Titan Pantheon and Lord of the Burning Legion, approaches the leaders of the eredar - Kil'jaeden, Archimonde and Velen - and offers them infinite power in exchange for their obedience. Kil'jaeden and Archimonde readily accept, but Velen refuses and desperately seeks to escape. His pleas for help are heard by the naaru, who take Velen and those who would follow him to safety. These refugees would become known later as the draenei - the exiled ones.
  • Ten thousand years before the First War, Queen Azshara and her Highborne begin summoning Sargeras and the Burning Legion to Azeroth using the Well of Eternity. The night elven people unite with the other mortal races and the powerful demigods to combat the Legion and end the summoning, thus beginning the conflict called the War of the Ancients. After defeating the Legion and banishing Sargeras back to the Nether, the Well of Eternity explodes, causing the Great Sundering that created the continents and islands seen today.
  • A millennia after the War of the Ancients, the Highborne and their leader Dath'Remar Sunstrider are exiled from night elven society for their refusal to end practice of magic. They travel across the Great Sea to what is now Tirisfal Glades, and eventually settle in the kingdom they call Quel'Thalas. Thus the Highborne become known as the high elves.
  • Seven thousand years later, Thoradin of the Arathi unites the human tribes into a single kingdom, Arathor. Shortly after this, Quel'Thalas and Arathor unite against the Amani Empire and completely destroy it. The high elves swear an oath of friendship with Thoradin and his bloodline, pledging themselves to aid his descendents in their times of need.
  • Kel'theris Whitehair, later called Decibelius, is born in Silvermoon City three hundred and fifty years before the First War.
  • Korogh Snowmane, later called Madeyes, is born in Thelsamar two hundred and fifty years before the First War.
  • Two hundred and thirty years before the First War, the Dark Iron Emperor Thaurissan and his wife Modgud assault the Bronzebeard and Wildhammer strongholds, beginning the War of the Three Hammers. In desperation, Thaurissan summons Ragnaros the Firelord into Azeroth, but Ragnaros (and the Dark Irons) are defeated and banished deep into Blackrock Mountain by the victorious Bronzebeard-Wildhammer alliance.
  • Ordevaas Whitehair, later called Portalseeker, is born in Tranquillien two hundred years before the First War.
  • Sekhesmet is born in Borealis in northern Lordaeron. The year is 532 on the Stormwind calendar.
  • Urgan is born in the Bleeding Hollow village on the edge of Terokkar Forest. The year is 557 on the Stormwind calendar.
  • Sekhesmet becomes a member of the priesthood.
  • Medivh, Guardian of Tirisfal, is born to the Azerothian conjurer Nielas Aran and the Guardian Aegwynn. Little does anyone know that he is also possessed by Sargeras. The year is 559 on the Stormwind calendar.
  • Llane is born to King Adamant Wrynn III and Queen Varia. The year is 564 on the Stormwind calendar. King Wrynn orders a great feast to take place marking the birth of an heir and the continuation of the Wrynn Dynasty.
  • Artimus Devaneaux is born in the Capital City of Lordaeron. The year is 565 on the Stormwind calendar.
  • Saavedro is born in the town of Corin's Crossing, south of Stratholme. The year is 572 on the Stormwind calendar. Around the time of Saavedro's birth, Medivh begins experiencing nightmares as the powers of Tirisfal - and Sargeras - awaken within him. Seeking out his father, he unleashes a psychic backlash felt as far away as Northshire Abbey. The conjurer and 100 clerics attempt to contain the raging powers of the boy. By the time it was done, Nielas Aran is dead and Medivh in a coma.
  • A year later, at 16, Urgan is taken to Oshu'gun during the Kosh'harg celebration, where he meets the ancestors for the first time. He begins the path of the shaman.
  • Ner'zhul, elder shaman of the orcish clans and chieftain of the Shadowmoon Clan, is urged by Kil'jaeden to make war on the draenei. Ner'zhul foolishly swears a Blood Pact with the demonlord. Shortly afterwards, the draenei holocaust begins.
  • Ner'zhul discovers that Kil'jaeden has tricked him and attempts to break off the Blood Pact he swore. Ner'zhul's place is reduced to observation as Kil'jaeden decides to train the elder shaman's apprentice, the power-hungry Gul'dan.
  • Sekhesmet is named High Priest of Stratholme in 574.
  • Blackhand, chieftain of the Blackrock Clan, is named Warchief of the newly-formed Horde. The structure now known as Hellfire Citadel begins construction.
  • The draenei city of Telmor is captured by the Horde.
  • The Horde lay siege to the Temple of Karabor, the refuge of the Prophet Velen, and capture it; it is renamed the Black Temple and becomes the headquarters of the Shadow Council led by Gul'dan.
  • Putting down his sword after a brutal conflict with the Amani, Ordevaas travels to Stratholme, where he joins the priesthood and is apprenticed to Sekhesmet in 577. Shortly after Sekhesmet takes his first apprentice, Sekhesmet becomes a father; his relationship with one of King Terenas' ladies-in-waiting produces a daughter, Euphrati.
  • The orcish clans, with one notable exception, drink the blood of Mannoroth.
  • Shattrath City is destroyed by the Horde. Velen is forced into hiding.
  • Settra is born in Borealis in northern Lordaeron. The year is 581 on the Stormwind calendar.

The First War

  • Medivh and Gul'dan open the Dark Portal in 583. As part of the Bleeding Hollow Clan, Urgan - still a shaman - participates in the First Siege of Stormwind Keep.
  • Llane becomes King of Azeroth.
  • Saavedro begins his apprenticeship to Sekhesmet in 585, at the age of 13.
  • Arthas Menethil, the future despoiler of Lordaeron and Quel'Thalas, is born to King Terenas of Lordaeron and his wife Lianne. The year is 590 on the Stormwind calendar.
  • Medivh is killed by his apprentice, Khadgar, in his mystic tower of Karazhan. Gul'dan, inside Medivh's mind, suffers a psychic backlash and goes into a coma.
  • Llane is assassinated by Garona Halforcen. Sometime later, Stormwind falls. The refugees, led by Anduin Lothar, reach Lordaeron.
  • Warchief Blackhand is betrayed and killed by his Second, Orgrim Doomhammer, who then proceeds to purge the Horde of demonic influence by destroying the Shadow Council.
  • The orc known as Thrall is born to Durotan, chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan and his mate Draka. Upon visiting with their old friend Orgrim Doomhammer, they are betrayed and murdered by Gul'dan's spies. Thrall is discovered by a human lieutenant named Aedelas Blackmoore, who takes him to his fortress of Durnholde.

The Second War

  • Orgrim Doomhammer forces Gul'dan to submit to his authority; Gul'dan promises to create a legion of warriors loyal only to the Warchief, able to combat the magics of the human wizards.
  • Anduin Lothar, Steward Lord of Azeroth, arrives on the shores of Lordaeron, with Khadgar and Prince Varian Wrynn, along with as many people as Lothar could find. They are brought before King Terenas Menethil II, ruler of Lordaeron, and plea for aid against the encroaching Horde.
  • Terenas calls the leaders of Humanity - Aiden Perenolde of Alterac, Genn Greymane of Gilneas, Daelin Proudmoore of Kul Tiras, Thoras Trollbane of Stromgarde, Archbishop Alonsus Faol of the Church of Light and Lord Antonidas of the Kirin Tor - to Lordaeron to discuss Lothar's warnings of the invading Horde and the plea for unity.
  • Orgrim Doomhammer enters into an alliance with Zul'jin, the warlord of the Amani forest trolls.

  • Uther the Lightbringer becomes the first paladin at the Alonsus Chapel in Stratholme, and four more - Tirion Fordring, Saidan Dathrohan, Turalyon and Gavinrad the Dire - are anointed shortly thereafter. Lothar names Turalyon his lieutenant.
  • Gul'dan resurrects Teron Gorefiend as the first of his Death Knights.
  • Zuluhed the Whacked and Nekros Skullcrusher capture the Dragonqueen Alexstrasza and subjugate her Red Dragonflight for use by the Horde.
  • Turalyon and Khadgar, joined by the elven ranger Alleria Windrunner, travel to Quel'Thalas, where they confront the Horde in the process of burning Eversong Woods.
  • Gul'dan appropriates one of the Runestones protecting Eversong Woods, and uses it to create his first Altar of Storms. The resultant energies produce the ogre-magi.
  • Alterac betrays the Alliance, allowing the Horde free passage into Lordaeron. Thoras Trollbane, King of Stromgarde, discovers the betrayal and - aided by General Hath, Lord Perenolde's top commander - cuts off the flow of Horde forces through the open passes.
  • Gul'dan sets out to sea with the Stormreaver and Twilight's Hammer clans to locate the Tomb of Sargeras. Gul'dan is successful, but is killed by the crazed demons unleashed when the tomb is opened.
  • Anduin Lothar is killed by Orgrim Doomhammer at the Battle of Blackrock Spire. Turalyon assumes command and proceeds to not only defeat Doomhammer's forces, but to chase them across Azeroth to the Dark Portal and destroy the mystic gateway.
  • Turalyon is named Lothar's successor as Supreme Allied Commander.
  • Ner'zhul reopens the Dark Portal and raids the world of Azeroth to obtain powerful items that would allow him to open portals to other worlds.
  • Sekhesmet, Saavedro, and Jarl (the future Archbishop Benedictus) accompany the aged Archbishop Alonsus Faol, Lord Khadgar and General Turalyon to the fortress of Nethergarde, standing watch over the reconstructed Dark Portal. There, Sekhesmet and Saavedro lead the blessing of the troops before their departure through the Dark Portal to Draenor.
  • Aedelas Blackmoore succeeds Danath Trollbane as head of the internment camp system, at the rank of Lieutenant General.
  • The Battle of Hellfire Peninsula results in the destruction of Draenor and the sealing of the Dark Portal.

Between the Second and Third Wars

  • At some point, Varian Wrynn is crowned King of Azeroth.
  • Artimus Devaneaux is named Magistrate of Tirisfal by King Terenas.
  • While traversing the Twisting Nether, having escaped Draenor, Ner'zhul and his forces are ambushed by Kil'jaeden. Kil'jaeden destroys Ner'zhul's body, and demands his fealty in exchange for untold power. Ner'zhul agrees, and his spirit is bound into a block of diamond-hard ice. His powers increase thousands-fold, and thus the Lich King is born. Kil'jaeden sends the icy cask back to Azeroth, where it comes to rest in Northrend - in the center of the Icecrown Glacier. The cask becomes known as the Frozen Throne.
  • Daval Prestor attempts to gain power in the Alliance by manuevering himself into the throne of Alterac. It is revealed sometime later that he is the mortal form of Deathwing, master of the Black Dragonflight. At the same time, he seeks to capture the eggs of his nemesis Alexstrasza to rebuild his shattered flight. Due to the intervention of Rhonin, Vereesa Windrunner and others, Alexstrasza is freed, and Deathwing vanishes.
  • King Anasterian Sunstrider, citing poor leadership on the part of the humans and believing his people's debt to the Arathi paid with Lothar's death, pulls Quel'Thalas out of the Alliance. Stromgarde and Gilneas follow suit.
  • Areinnye Whitehair, daughter of Ordevaas, is born in Suncrown Village, south of Eversong Woods. The year is 600 on the Stormwind calendar.
  • The Plague of Undeath begins in Northrend as the Lich King begins to build up the powers of the Scourge, using his telepathic domination to take control of the native life in Northrend, as well as raise the dead to do his bidding.
  • Sekhesmet is elected to the High Priesthood of Lordaeron; Saavedro becomes High Priest of Stratholme.
  • Escorted by Lord Kel'theris and his son Ordevaas, Euphrati is ambushed by Artimus Devaneaux and murdered in retribution for beating him in the Durnholde dueling ring. Ordevaas wounds Artimus in the leg, leaving him with a limp that would last the rest of his life.
  • Thrall escapes from Durnholde and discovers his origins as a member of the Frostwolf Clan. Under the tutelage of Drek'Thar, Thrall becomes a powerful shaman. Uniting with Grom Hellscream and Orgrim Doomhammer, Thrall leads the liberation of the internment camps, and becomes Warchief following the death of Doomhammer.
  • The new Horde, commanded by Thrall, completely destroys Durnholde, ending the internment system. During the combat, Thrall meets Aedelas Blackmoore in combat, and defeats him.
  • The Lich King enters into a war with the Spider Kingdom of Azjol-Nerub, which boils down to a war of attrition. After defeating the Nerubians, he raises their dead in his service and adopts their architecture for his own fortresses.
  • King Terenas and High Priest Sekhesmet dispatch Saavedro and Ordevaas as ambassadors from the Lordaeron priesthood to Stormwind.
  • Archbishop Faol dies.

  • At some point, Magtheridon takes possession of the ruins of Draenor, calling himself "Lord of Outland".

The Third War

  • The Scourge unleashes its plague in northern Lordaeron. The House of Barov makes a deal with Kel'Thuzad, giving over their palace as the dreaded Scholomance, a school of necromancy. Artimus Devaneaux - visiting his master, Lord Alexei - escapes from Caer Darrow.
  • Prince Arthas, Lord Uther and Lady Jaina Proudmoore investigate orcish and undead activity in northern Lordaeron, trying to pin down the source of the plague.
  • Prince Arthas kills Kel'Thuzad.
  • North Lordaeron falls to the Scourge; Settra joins the Lordaeronian army, and rises to the rank of General.
  • Prince Arthas destroys Stratholme, then makes his way to Northrend, where he takes up the runeblade Frostmourne - thus becoming the intended host of the bodiless Lich King.
  • Becoming a powerful death knight, Prince Arthas returns to the Eastern Kingdoms and proceeds to kill his father, King Terenas, as well as his mentor Lord Uther. Lordaeron falls to the Scourge. The elderly High Priest Sekhesmet dies in Terenas' throne room.
  • Arthas invades Quel'Thalas with the aid of Dar'Khan Drathir, and resurrects Kel'Thuzad in the waters of the Sunwell. The Sunwell explodes, cutting the elves off from their source of magic. King Anasterian Sunstrider and the Convocation of Silvermoon are killed in the assault on Silvermoon.
  • Jaina Proudmoore, at the behest of a mysterious prophet, leads those who would follow her west across the Great Sea to Kalimdor.
  • Mograine, Abbendis and Isillien found the Scarlet Crusade. Mograine creates the Ashbringer.
  • At the invitation of General Abbendis, Artimus Devaneaux joins the Scarlet Crusade. He later becomes a Scarlet Commander.
  • Settra is killed by the death knight Baron Rivendare during an attack on Stratholme. The Baron resurrects Settra as a member of the Scourge, but - impressed by the skill he had wielded - sends him to the death knight training wing inside Naxxramas.
  • Kel'Thuzad summons Archimonde, who proceeds to destroy Dalaran.
  • The Scourge invade Kalimdor; Tyrande Whisperwind proceeds to awaken the druids - and her love, Malfurion Stormrage - from their barrow dens.
  • Tyrande frees Malfurion's brother Illidan from his ten-millennia imprisonment.
  • Illidan, encouraged by Arthas, consumes the energies of the Skull of Gul'dan.
  • The prophet who led Jaina and Thrall to Kalimdor reveals himself as a resurrected Medivh, seeking to atone for his past sins while possessed by Sargeras. He calls upon the humans, orcs and night elves to form an alliance against Archimonde's invasion of Kalimdor.
  • Archimonde is destroyed by the primal fury of Nordrassil at the Battle of Mount Hyjal.

The Rise of the Betrayer

  • Illidan Stormrage is visited by Kil'jaeden the Deceiver, now Supreme Commander of the Burning Legion. Kil'jaeden offers Illidan a place in the Legion in exchange for destroying the Lich King. Illidan agrees, and sets about calling the naga from their undersea dens.
  • Maiev Shadowsong continues the hunt for Illidan that will take her across two continents - and two worlds. She first follows Illidan to the Broken Isles, where the Betrayer retrieves the Eye of Sargeras from the Dark Titan's tomb.
  • Maiev encounters Prince Kael'thas, last of the Sunstrider dynasty and leader of the blood elves.
  • Illidan enters the ruins of Dalaran with the Eye of Sargeras, where he proceeds to cast a spell that would potentially destroy the Lich King. However, he is stopped by his brother Malfurion.
  • Settra completes his training in Naxxramas and returns to Lordaeron. He serves as commander of Scourge forces loyal to the Lich King, alongside Kel'Thuzad, until the return of Prince Arthas.
  • After failing to obey Kil'jaeden's command, Illidan flees to Outland to evade the Deceiver's wrath. Maiev, consumed by vengeance, follows him.
  • Prince Kael'thas and his blood elves are arrested by Grand Marshal Garithos for accepting the aid of the naga under Lady Vashj, servitors of Illidan. With Vashj's aid, Kael and his blood elves escape from Dalaran via the portal opened by Kel'Thuzad to summon Archimonde.
  • After being freed by Kael'thas and Vashj, and securing the aid of the Broken draenei seer Akama, Illidan seals the dimensional gates opened by Ner'zhul - used by Magtheridon to supply his demonic forces.
  • The Illidari lay siege to the Black Temple, Magtheridon's stronghold. Illidan defeats Magtheridon in combat, and chains the Pit Lord in Hellfire Citadel, his blood used to create fel orcs to serve in his armies. After Illidan takes control of the Temple, Kil'jaeden appears and again demands that Illidan destroy the Frozen Throne.

The Rise of the Lich King

  • Arthas, now calling himself King of Lordaeron, returns from Kalimdor. He begins to suffer seizures, as his power is bound to that of the Lich King via Frostmourne - and the Lich King is losing power daily due to the effects of Illidan's spell. Sylvanas Windrunner - freed from the Lich King's domination - ambushes Arthas and forces him to flee the ruined capital city to go to Northrend.
  • Sylvanas Windrunner obtains the loyalty of both General Settra and the Dreadlord Varimathras and proceeds to destroy the armies of Detheroc and Balnazzar, as well as Lord Garithos. Sylvanas refers to her undead forces as the Forsaken, and they proceed to take control of Lordaeron.
  • After the capture of Lordaeron, General Settra goes into hiding.
  • Saidan Dathrohan, the Grand Crusader of the Scarlet Crusade (and the new "face" of Balnazzar, believed to have been killed shortly before) strikes a deal with Kel'Thuzad to destroy the Ashbringer, Highlord Mograine, who is a severe threat to both the Scourge and to Dathrohan/Balnazzar's powerbase. Mograine, his son Renault and his advisor Fairbanks enter the ruins of Stratholme, where they are ambushed by a thousand Scourge. Mograine defeats them, but is betrayed by his son, who runs Ashbringer through his father's heart.
  • Kel'Thuzad resurrects Mograine as a Death Knight.
  • Arthas arrives in Northrend, where he is aided by the Crypt Lord Anub'arak in attempting to reach the Lich King. They enter the ruins of Azjol-Nerub, where they confront a being known as a Forgotten One (possibly an Old God).
  • Illidan begins the invasion of Icecrown, but is defeated in single combat by Arthas.
  • Arthas breaks the Frozen Throne and places the incredibly powerful helm on his head, binding himself to Ner'zhul; a new Lich King is created.
  • Artimus Devaneaux, on his way to the Scarlet Monastery, is ambushed by necromancers loyal to the House of Barov and left for dead. He travels across Lordaeron for several months, wounded and amnesiac.

  • Ordevaas obtains the Discs of Norgannon from the vaults of Uldaman. Returning with them to Thunder Bluff, he is then dispatched to Tanaris, to attempt to open the gates of Uldum. However, he is missing a portion of the Discs required to open those gates.
  • Ordevaas learns the workings of the crystal pylons of Un'Goro Crater.
  • Ordevaas enters Outland.
  • After battling his way through Hellfire Peninsula, Ordevaas returns to Quel'Thalas and is trained by Lady Liadrin herself to become a Master of the Blood Knight Order. After completing tasks at her command - including destroying a Scourge siege encampment near the gates of Quel'Thalas, and taking corrupted holy water from the Scarlet abbey in Tyr's Hand - Ordevaas enters the eastern districts of Stratholme and extinguishes the eternal flame within the Alonsus Chapel. He then kills Aurius, the chapel guardian, and does battle with five spirits of the Silver Hand. After defeating them and returning to Silvermoon, Lady Liadrin bestows upon him the rank of Master.

Artimus

  • Artimus arrives in Ambermill, where he collapses. He is sent to the town of Southshore where he is tended to by Saavedro, who reveals exactly what happened in regards to the Scarlet Crusade.
  • Artimus is taken to Northshire Abbey to potentially retrain his skills with the blade.
  • Alone and feeling left out of things, Artimus descends into madness. Like Sargeras, Artimus believes that chaos, not order, is the way of things. He suddenly disappears from Northshire Abbey, and travels back to his native Lordaeron.
  • Artimus enters the Scholomance and encounters his old master, Lord Alexei Barov. The Barov patriarch is tempted to kill Artimus for his "treachery", but a command from the Lich King stops him. Intrigued by the potential within the former Barov vassal, the Lich King sends Artimus to Naxxramas.
  • Artimus, throwing his sanity to the wind, kneels before Kel'Thuzad in Naxxramas and pledges himself to the Lich King, the Scourge, and to death itself. He becomes a death knight of the House of Barov.
  • Sneaking aboard a plagued transport, Artimus travels to Northrend, where he has not been seen since...

Combined Efforts

  • Decibelius, Ordevaas, Areinnye and Sekhesmet join forces in their battle against Dar'Khan. They behead the abominations Knucklerot and Luzran and lay siege to his fortress of Deatholme. In the resulting battle, Dar'Khan is beheaded and his lieutenants destroyed, his head delivered to Lor'themar Theron as a trophy.
  • After defeating Dar'Khan, the four go to battle against the Amani forest trolls, and behead Kel'gash the Wicked.
  • Decibelius, Ordevaas and Sekhesmet reunite, this time in Shadowfang Keep where they must do battle against the forces of Arugal. Arugal too is beheaded, his head delivered to the Sepulcher.
