The Hellhounds is a force directly under the command of Sarin, a powerful Nathrezim lord who’s on the path to absolute power. Originally a Scourge battalion in the Third War, the Hellhounds have broken away from the Scourge and maintain their own, dark agenda, while still holding connections with the Scourge. The Hellhounds primary objective is the accumulation of power, specifically for their master, whom they serve with out question.

History
Edit
In the beginning of the Scourge’s campaign across Lordaeron, teams were created and set out across Lordaeron. One of the teams constructed a small base and attempted to summon a dreadlord leader into the world via their Altar of Darkness. Instead of summoning a dreadlord of the Legion, the undead summoned in Sarin, another Nathrezim, unaffiliated with the Legion on his own quest for power. The undead, completely unaware that he was not employed by the Legion, accepted his leadership immediately and without question. He named the small team the Hellhounds, and they began their march upon the living.
The Hellhounds were a very effective, merciless fighting force, going from a battalion to a near-full fledged army by the end of the war. Their main claim to fame was the fact that they almost never used any magic, with the exception of Ioannis, and his lieutenants. Nearly every one of their victories was won with sheer physical might, as opposed to magical knowledge.
At the end of the war, after Prince Arthas merged with the Lich King, most of the separate teams were disbanded, their troops merged into one massive war marchine. Sarin, holding no true loyalty to the Lich King, nor the Scourge, decided to keep his troops together and under his control. Confusion occurred in the ranks as the sentient forces debated who they held allegiance to; their direct commander, Sarin, or the Lich King. Eventually a civil war broke out with nearly 60% of the troops attempting to leave the Hellhounds to join the rest of the Scourge. In the conflict that ensued, about 45% of the Scourge-loyalist forces were killed (the rest managed to flee), with the Sarin-loyalists loosing another 20% of their forces. While the Hellhounds came out victorious, overall they had lost almost 80% of their original forces. This caused the Hellhounds to become an underground force, rather than the open war machine it once was.
The Hellhounds Today
Edit
Sarin managed to take what little remained of his army and turned them into a following, a group who’s primary goal is to obtain absolute power (primarily for their master). To that end, the Hellhounds operate as an underground operation, secretly and deceptively manipulating events and carrying out operations that would further their masters dark goal.
Presently, the Hellhounds are in Northrend, engaged in the ongoing conflict with the Scourge --- or so it would seem. Rumor has it that the Hellhounds are actually in league with the Scourge.
Ranking System
Edit
Standard Rankings
Edit
These are the standard ranks in the Hellhounds, in descending order of highest rank to lowest rank.
Supreme-Commander – The highest rank in the organization. The Supreme-Commander is the head of the Hellhounds and has absolute authority over all other members. There is only ever one Supreme-Commander at a time, and the original Supreme-Commander has never relinquished the post.
Lieutenant – The second highest rank in the organization. A lieutenant is second only to the Supreme-Commander. There are typically at least two lieutenants at a time, and rarely any more than that. Lieutenants answer directly to the Supreme-Commander and are the most trusted members of the team. They have the authority to command vast amounts of the organization’s forces and make decisions independently, though most of the time they consult the Supreme-Commander. Lieutenants are also advisors to the Supreme-Commander, and the lieutenants will often convene with the Supreme-Commander to discuss tactics and plans for the organization.
The only way to become a lieutenant is to show unbelievable leadership and strength in the field, at which point the Supreme-Commander himself will appoint one to the position.
High Commander – A high commander is, well a high position. They have control over large groups of the Hellhound’s forces and report directly to the lieutenants.
Commander – Commanders have control over small groups of the organization’s forces. They can make mundane tactical decisions on their own, but for anything significant, they must consult a superior.
Grunt – Grunts are the standard foot soldier rank. A grunt is typically in the field, engaging the enemy directly. Grunts are not purely physical in nature. A savage, axe wielding orc can be a grunt, as can a calm, spell casting elf.
Acolyte – An acolyte is the lowest rank in the Hellhounds. Acolytes perform mundane tasks and generally learn basic spells and combat skills.
There is noticeably no initiate rank. Initiates are technically not part of the Hellhounds, and anyone attempting to gain entry to the Hellhounds must complete a series of missions to prove their loyalty before they are inducted.
Other Rankings
Edit
There are also several non-standard ranks in the Hellhounds.
Supreme-Lich – The Supreme-Lich is the master of magical affairs, typically being the most powerful spellcaster in the organization.
Supreme-Death Knight – The Supreme-Death Knight is the master of exacting the master’s will by physical force. He is typically the most powerful warrior in the Hellhounds.
Battle Master – The Battle Master is a battle hardened individual who’s experience on the field has elevated him to being highly trusted in military affairs. His authority is somewhere between a lieutenant and high commander.
Banner
Edit
A red wolf-print is the universal symbol of the Hellhounds. Most members of the organization bear this symbol somewhere on their person, whether it be a tattoo, pendant, or painted on their armor, most have the emblem.
The Hellhound flag is the red wolf-print against a black flag. This flag was traditionally placed at all Hellhound bases, but with their decline of power, most of the bases have either been destroyed or remain abandoned, and with their current status of being an underground organization, it would be unwise to begin planting banners around. When the Hellhounds served the Scourge, the flag had a small Scourge crest at the bottom right corner.
