“…and that is how we came to know the gift of Morrowgrain. Are there any questions?”

The class’s attention was focused entirely on the teacher; a wandering wolf could have killed them all in a heartbeat so rapt were they in the tale she had finished telling.

Six tauren children evenly mixed between male and female, and their teacher sat on the warm grass just outside Bloodhoof Village. Idle plainstriders wandered here and there, but no one noticed. It was like this every week, the same boring stupid stories told over again, the same boring stupid animals walking by, and the same boring stupid classma—

“Awnea, I noticed you were intently watching a blade of grass in front of you. What is so interesting about it? Did you learn anything from the story I told?”

Awnea wasn’t startled by her teacher’s interruption, just annoyed; every week at the same time the teacher tried to get her to interact, and every week she failed. Awnea looked up, inwardly sighing at her inability to fade into the background of the society she lived in.

“You asked two questions, and I’ll answer them in turn.” Awnea spoke with more force than usual. She scared herself.

“To the first I say, I learned from that particular piece of grass a lesson about the universe. I watched it for a time, and while I couldn’t see it growing I knew that it was. Life continues on, regardless of whether I have any interaction with it.”

She reached down and carefully plucked a single blade of grass from the dirt under her crossed hoofs.

“And now I’ve taught it a lesson, the last lesson it will ever learn. Its life will never be the same.”

She tossed the tiny green sword over her shoulder and it fluttered slowly back down to the earth it had been brutally ripped from moments before.

“And now I’ve given it back to the Earth Mother. The lesson is complete. Its death will contribute to the continued growth of this world and make it stronger.”

The young tauren paused for a moment in her speech, breathing, letting her words sink into her mindless peers.

“To the second question I say I learned nothing, except how to tune out the voice of fools who think the world is full of rainbows and lessons to be learnt in all thin—“

“Awnea! Are you going to answer my question?”

The teacher spoke again, breaking Awnea out of her daydream, the same one she had every week at this time. Awnea looked up, and the teacher thought for a moment that the shy young girl might say something for once, might have something to give to the group to make it better, as all young tauren are taught to do.

“Nothing, ma’am…yes ma’am.” She answered quietly and looked back down at the grass at her feet. The other children snickered quietly, they loved it when she got picked out of the crowd by the teacher. A cool wind blew the warm air away and rustled the meadow around her. She watched that piece of grass fluttering in the wind, alive and well, for now.

(( Sorry Dyani if you’re reading this, I liked your story. It was just conveniently placed for my character to mock. Smiley ))
