History
World Of Warcraft!
This was my first WoW character ever. I chose a paladin because I was mostly hellbent on being 'independent' and attempting to play this game with minimal interaction with others. My limited experience with other MMOs was that most people were excessively rude, unhelpful and zero tolerance to new players who didn't know the game - this opinion has only continued in WoW. As a paladin I expected to be somewhat similar to a warrior, hard to kill and able to dps well, but also with the ability to heal myself which I deemed vital if I wanted to 'solo' content. This mindset led me to avoid joining a guild for leveling, which essentially left me a little slow to pick up on some of the etiquette and linguistics of the game (e.g. greed/need, 'tank', 'dps', 'aoe' etc). Eventually I was devastated to discover that I would not be able to solo my way through DM until I was of such a level that the gear would be useless and decided maybe a guild wasn't such a bad idea after all. Hence eventually I accepted an offer to join Lords of Thrudheim!
Lords of Thrudheim
I was originally in a 'zerg' leveling guild called <Lords of Thrudheim> on Aman'thul. I had managed to buy wow and get it installed and running on the first day of Aman'thul. Being new to MMOs and WoW inparticular I was slow to level and very helpful with my guildies helping them to level up and gear up as well. I didn't hit 60 until beginning of August ~2months. At this stage I had become an officer of my guild and we were discussing what we could do to help our members start to gear up. LoT had been set up initially by some members of a guild on proudmore (same name) who had intended to all xfer to the new oceanic realm to begin raiding. Unfortunately Aman'thul was closed to xfers for an extended period of time and the Proudmore guild had moved on and begun raiding there - this left the GM of LoT and the other officers in a bad position since they had rerolled on Aman'thul with the expectation to have their other friends xfer to join them. Once this became clear the gm and a few officers began spending less and less time on Aman'thul and more time on their original characters on proudmoore. Hence the guild started slowly dying as we had few level 60 players and they often didn't stay around long as they moved to bigger and better guilds. We began to organise 'guild' stratholme/scholo and even UBRS runs, however we were typically frustrated by the lack of level 60 guildies and the few 60s didn't want to spend the majority of their time helping the others finish leveling. Eventually we even set up to raid with Reddot a few times in ZG with their very helpful gm Ab. Unfortunately those raids were not particularly good (most time I've ever wiped to the bat boss), though these raids were essentially the beginning of my acceptance of 'paladins are healbots'. Myself and a few others from LoT were eager to begin raiding and didn't intend to do nothing for 2-3months while the rest of the guild leveled, slowly our higher level players started moving on making it even harder for us to organise lvl 60 content. Shortly after this we decided to disband and the level 60 players merged with Prediction and the others mostly reformed into Phoenix templars (which is still alive on Aman'thul and completely ignorant of how they formed! c.f. http://www.warcraftrealms.com/charhistory/35424916 an old friend of mine who was the original gm of phoenix templars). Lords of Thrudheim was a lot of fun and I learnt a lot from the people there. I recall one particular conversation from Echidna who advised me to never turn into a hardcore raider, those guilds are all full of people who hate each other and only put up with each other for loot - as soon as the bosses stop dying and loot stops rolling the guild falls apart as the people can no longer stand to be together. "You're too nice a guy, don't turn into them!" While I didn't take his advice, I remember it and in all my experience raiding it has remained true of every raiding guild I have been in or watched.
Prediction
Prediction was a raiding guild that had cleared ZG and was working in MC. Unfortunately the week we joined up with them some internal drama was going on and the raid leader xfered off back to his original server. I can't recall his name, but we quickly left this guild which only lasted another month or so before eventually disbanding.
T S C
I followed a friend of mine (Dl), who had taught me how to use vent among other things (back while I was in LoT), to another raiding guild <T S C>. TSC had also cleared ZG and was working in MC at the time (they were 3rd on the server in progression). I joined their ranks of pallies and we had lots of fun and their raid leader (Bluey - paladin) was very successful in teaching me the finer points on playing a paladin. I stayed with TSC for a long time, eventually clearing MC, Ony, BWL, AQ20, up to sartura in AQ40 and almost all emerald dragons. There were several various 'drama' events that went on within tsc however they never effected the pallies and I remained mostly oblivious to the extended issues with the warriors and officers. I picked up my bad habit of being an excessive farmer from tsc as we had a need for FR gear for tanks and hence I spent a lot of my time in burning steppes mining dark iron ore - I believe donating enough ore to the guild to make complete FR sets for most of the warriors and some extra FR pieces for a few other classes. We also had a bank running to store up gems for the upcoming expansion and jewelcrafting profession which I donated every gem I came across to.. which was a lot considering I farmed burning steppes all the time. TSC was a very fun guild and quite family friendly in many ways. It had an interesting atmosphere as a large number of the raiders were all in the army in some function and many of them had connections irl. There wasn't a big push within the guild to 'be the best' just to have fun with others who weren't complete nubs. Unfortunately though, tsc planned to stop raiding over xmas holidays from November til mid January ('07) and our current main raid leader Bluey was planning on being overseas for the most part of the next year. I had hoped to spend the majority of my holidays playing more wow since I expected to be picking up a lot more uni work the following year (as I started my honours degree) and would probably need to cut back in raiding at that time. By now I was relatively confident in my raiding abilities and 'skill' in this game (how hard is it to press 3 buttons?) and was curious to see how high or far I could push myself. With those two issues on my mind I eventually accepted an offer from Dynasty to join with them to continue raiding and hence I left TSC.
Dynasty
Dynasty was, and continues to be an amazing guild. They were very fast risers pre-tbc. The majority of their raid consisted of people who had just hit 60, in blues and greens with no experience. However they cleared MC and BWL inc ony and the 20mans in roughly 2 months. I joined them just after they had their first nefarian kill and I was by far their best geared paladin. Dynasty continued to push with pre-tbc raiding right up to the night servers went down for maintenance upgrading to TBC - we had just wiped on maexxna at 20% when servers went down - because our tank forgot to shield wall! During pre-tbc dynasty was very good at farming the world bosses, with alts located at each spawn point to watch when they were up each day and we would kill them every time they were up with however many people were online. To the extent where we would kill dragons at 3am with 7 people online and one of them being two-boxed.
Dynasty overtook TSC's progression and became the #3 guild on the server by the end of classic wow they were giving void(#2) some heavy competition (void's progression remained 1 boss higher, however they could not repeat some of their kills consistently). On the whole we were very happy and proud of our achievement as a guild and thats what made us good friends and openly creating drama on the server and forums. Pre-TBC Dynasty did manage to get themselves one 'server first' by killing Lord Kruul - while this fight is similar to Kazzak there were a few differences which made it noticeably more difficult - ss here [3].
When TBC hit however after and during the initial leveling curve we lost a lot of members. Many due to drama and unhappiness with the leadership within the guild (e.g. Heel, deniedaccess, Dl) and others who saw the transition to 25man raiding as an opportunity to set up their own guild (e.g. Menthonso) and a few others yet who just all out quit the game (knono, recentkill etc). Even so dynasty pushed hard and recruited hard and managed to maintain their server #3 position (void disbanded and resilience #1 split into 2 25man raiding guilds) throughout kara, gruuls, magtheridon and the world bosses. Upon reaching 70 however I took a much more casual approach to raiding, as mentioned earlier I had begun my honours degree at university and I fluctuated in about a 2 month cycle of being able to raid and not being able to over the year.
Around the time dynasty killed magtheridon (before it got nerfed - the first time!) there were several new 'top' raiding guilds which xfered to aman'thul, including singularity and a bit earlier Reborn. With the number of 'top' raiding guilds pushed up to 6-7 there was a lot of server drama and server instability and queue times of 1000+ =(. Eventually blizzard opened up free xfers to nagrand. Dynasty had already begun discussion of server xfering before the news of free xfers had arrived mostly due to the instability and queue times restricting raiding. The news of free xfers and currently closed AQ gates was really too much temptation and we decided to take the xfer.
Not long before this I had chosen to leave dynasty and just go casual since I needed to spend more time on my university work and while within dynasty I always felt a pressure that I was letting them down by not being there to heal for them. Anyhow, I had remained friends with Feli and yeshy and joined them with some of their pre-tbc raids (we often used to go clear MC or AQ20 or w/e after regular raids with whoever wanted to stay up an extra hour). With news of the new xfers Feli was pushing to complete her AQ opening quest chain and I joined along and they helped completed mine as well (since I was at the same stage as Feli). I rejoined dynasty and remained a casual and we x-fered to nagrand and quickly opened the AQ gates (giving the server only 24 hours for which there was much forum disappointment - from 2 people /gg).
My position with dynasty was a permanent casual raider, though when I raided I was the paladin class leader. After xfering to nagrand I still remained mostly absent from raids fluctuating as before in my availability - we continued our pre-tbc raids after regular raids and completed yeshy's thunderfury and my own hand of ragnaros (in the same clear!). Eventually however I gave in and left dynasty once again - I was no longer raiding with them as I was furiously trying to write my thesis and my wife's characters were all on Aman'thul and we were not able to help each other with the occasional questing/grinding/5mans etc. Hence I took a paid xfer back to aman'thul. I had cleared 5/6 ssc and 1/4 tk with dynasty and been with them almost a year in total. During that time and throughout TBC most of the friends I knew in the guild had left, however my closest friends remained and it was not pleasant leaving them behind.
Old School
Upon landing back on Aman'thul I had no real intention of raiding full-time again so I picked up on the more casual side of the game. I started doing more pvp and joined my first arena teams. While I was still on Aman'thul originally I had leveled a rogue to 70 and started my own alt-guild called <old school>. Upon xfering I had left this guild in a friend's hands and stbernadus aka cantillion had managed to turn it into a little kara farming guild for a bunch of friends, mostly casual ex-raiders from top guilds pre-tbc. I joined up with them and on occasion when I needed a brake from studying I'd come clear kara with them. For the most part I wasn't online very much and I did little with this guild other than keep in contact with what was happening in the gaming scene. Most of the members of old school were getting restless as they didn't have enough numbers to move into 25mans and zul'aman had not yet been released so other than the 3hrs it took them to clear kara they didn't have other raids they could attend. As I was getting close to the end of my thesis I begun to look for a guild I could begin raiding with that was close to the progression I had stopped raiding at. Eventually I apped to the new zealand guild on Aman'thul <Noctis Erus> who were 5/6 3/4 at the time.
Noctis Erus
I was accepted by NE even though I had made it explicit that I would not be able to raid consistently until I had completed my thesis which was roughly a month away. I raided once with them in ssc to get to know them and then returned to my casual state until completing my thesis and final exams for the year. Once my honours had completed I begun to raid heavily with noctis erus and we cleared Vashj and had about 2-3 weeks learning on Kael'thas. While initially I had joined NE thinking their raid times would be great -start early finish early - allowing me to get to sleep at a reasonable time, it slowly became apparent that the early starting time was problematic as I would consistently either arrive late or have no time for my wife after coming home from work (I continued to tutor and demonstrate for university though my study had finished). I talked to the officers about this problem and begun asking around to see which guilds needed a good paladin. In total I only stayed with noctis erus around 2-3 months, raiding for only a month.
Very quickly I got several offers, notably from Molotov and Not Steamboat. Essentially I chose nsb over molotov similarly due to raiding times - molotov's raids go quite late and I wouldn't like to commit to being on that late every raid night. Hence I began raiding with the top guild on the server and the top oceanic guild - being the first to kill illidan.
Naxxpug
The very first 'naxxpug' that was run on Aman'thul was organised by Midnight and I as a 'fun' night raiding between all the top guilds. Invites were restricted to the top ~5-6 guilds on the server. The idea was to clear naxx every week on a saturday and maintain good relations between the top guilds and get to know them (there was a large amount of 'drama' at the time these runs were part of helping these diminish). In these first runs almost noone really knew the correct strats for fights so there was plenty of wipes as we figured things out. These runs essentially died as the members from top guilds on the whole weren't interested in prolonged farming of content that was 'useless' and returned to their saturday farming of Kara. We only managed to clear 13/15 of the naxx bosses, with sapphiron still bugged and the complete lack of frost resistance being problematic.
After xfering with Dynasty to nagrand I continued this idea of naxxpug runs with the help of Feli and Yeshy. However, once again these runs didn't last long since eventually people turned to doing more 'profitable' things on saturday night.
Once I returned to Aman'thul in the back of my mind remained the concept of restarting these runs and I set out to do things a little differently and hence took some time to discuss how to do things 'fairly' and continue to have these runs interesting and maintain a regular high attendance. Eventually it was coupled with a desire by the various members of Noctis Erus who wanted to go explore some of the pre-tbc raids they never completed and I settled on a few decisions and opened up the naxxpug to the server. I made several changes to how it was originally run, notably everyone was welcome with being level 70 the only prerequisite (and attuned). I also altered the loot rules and have since varied these rules a few times based on feedback from the raids and further discussions.
Naxxpug is now run as an open raid that starts early on a Saturday afternoon and clears Naxxramas and occasionally AQ40 or elsewhere as well - we have had a few 12hr raids. At the time I started the only other place I knew this was occurring was by Death and Taxes. We were able to fully clear Naxx for the first time on the server and we have since also completed our first Atiesh staff working on the 2nd. I run this old school pug fairly often, though not every week as people lose interest if they do it too often. I maintain a bank alt full of pre-tbc raid mats that I hand out for free to regular attendees of my runs to assist in their completion of their Tier 3/2.5 sets or the many people attempting the AQ scepter chain etc. I maintain the early start time (5pm) out of respect for Noctis Erus and the many New Zealand players that enjoy coming along.
Not Steamboat
Raiding with NSB has been a completely different experience to any other to date. Always I've been in a guild that was progressing and pushing for new kills to boost their status in the server. NSB however was on farm mode, clearing BT and hyjal easily in 2 nights - though we often cleared it in 3 nights and just ended raids very early. Upon joining nsb I joined new pvp teams leaving my old partners behind, these teams essentially only remained active for the first 2-3 weeks of s3 as we pushed our 5v5 team to get 1850 for the weapons (yep we were server first for this as well) and then played once more for points and then stopped - we never attempted to push again for shoulders since our focus is pve and the weapons were useful for pve and shoulders not. While raiding with nsb one of the biggest changes has been the excess amount of spare time. With the raiding changes that happened with TBC there was no longer a huge need to farm consumables and maintain a 'stash' of these. So begins my long rep grind, I joined NSB with only ~5 exalted factions (Zandalar tribe, Cenarian Circle, Argent dawn, stormpike guard, Violet Eye) early november '07 and I have currently farmed up 33 exalted factions in my spare time and working on the rest - though I made a mistake and will not be able to get bloodsail rep =(. Between reputation factions, a few alts, badge farming, cash grinding, mount farming (bears) and running old school pugs I have managed to stay active most days within WoW.
Sunwell
What can I say, sunwell has been one of the best but also most frustrating raid experiences to date. The release of sunwell sparked a huge world wide rush for progression. This was definitely the driving force within nsb our aim being to improve on our world wide rank which was set upon clearing BT. Through a lot of frustration resulting in gkicks, gquits, the entire guild server xfering, 100-200 thousand gold on repairs... we were successful in gaining the server first sunwell clear and greatly increasing our world ranking. Once again however we now return to farm status and have earnt back our gold spent on repairs by selling sunwell loot and ZA bears. Sunwell was a unique experience with the progression competition increased due to the staging release of the bosses. While it was sad to lose some of our skilled players during this process (midnight, elmac, yumchat, aevie, nimothar etc) in the end the guild has preserved where many have died and is stronger for that fact (since we also recruited the skill from those that died (; ). Of all the bosses I think KJ was the best fight, though all of them were well tuned and unique in their mechanics - a big step up from the stationary tank and spank boss standing in the middle of lava... Since removing nimothar from the guild ranks I have since cleared sunwell more times as prot than as holy. My conclusion: prot is easy and boring, wtb healing spec.
