Vrykul are a race of heavily Norse-themed half-giant warriors native to the Howling Fjord, located in southeastern Northrend. It is said that in ancient times the vrykul race inhabited the land, founding a vast and prosperous civilization. Suddenly one day, without warning or explanation, the vrykul race vanished, leaving behind only deserted villages and abandoned temples. Due to the encroachment of the Alliance settlement of Valgarde on their lands, vrykul have recently returned.
Wrath of the Lich KingEdit
Led by King Ymiron, these formidable warriors have begun attacking Horde and Alliance settlements from the fortress of Utgarde Keep, not far from Valgarde. Vrykul motives and their whereabouts for the past several thousand years remains a mystery, though they have recently become allied with the Lich King, accepting him as their "Death God".
The quest Anguish of Nifflevar states that vrykul children born in a certain time after their gods "abandoned" them were "weak and ugly". King Ymiron ordered all those children to be killed, but events observed in the preceding quest The Echo of Ymiron imply that not all of the parents obeyed this order, instead hiding their children in order for them to grow up far away from Northrend. This evinces that vrykul are the progenitors of humans, which is also stated by Thoralius the Wise - "There is no extinct "missing link" to humans as the Explorers' League proposed. The vrykul are the missing link. They are the progenitors of humanity".
A dialogue uncovered by Brann Bronzebeard in Ulduar lists the vrykul (along with the earthen and the giants) as "seed races", implying that they are direct creations of the titans as opposed to having evolved from some other race over time.
Alliance Faction (Playable)Edit
Though, there were rumors that not all Vrykuls were brutal and savage in nature. A hidden clan (known as the Northfall clan) were a peaceful organization of original Vrykul that lived in the northern part of Howling Fjord. Before abandoning their civilization, the Vrykul lived peacefully until their civilization was destroyed. The Northfall clan had to abandon everything, and travel to the northern mountains where they would remain in hiding. The Vrykul lived peacefully in the underground mountains, believing that they were safe. But they were wrong!
After the Lich King's death, Bolvar Fordragon who became the new lich king, ordered the Scourge to move underground which was where the hidden Vrykul were. The Vrykul were forced to leave their underground, and move far south. Moving south to Dragonblight, the Vrykul battled against the ferocious Sea Vrykul, and stoled their ships to travel far south. Traveling to the Eastern Kingdoms, the Vrykul land on Northeron. Believing that it was perfect place for them, the Northfall clan continue their civilization. Traveling around the land, the Vrykul discover a capital city which was abandoned by the Wildhammer Dwarves. It was ruined Second War. The Northfall clan moved inside the city, and explore the place. The Vrykul decided to rebuild the city, and build defensive settlements around the land.
During the cataclysm, few of their settlements were destroyed, and the Vrykul had to take themselves a while to rebuild everything. This was not until they were discovered by Alliance forces that landed on the beach. The Vrykul did not reply to fight them since they fled from the undead Scourge. The Vrykul explained their stories about the ancient times and the Humans and Dwarves accepted to help them. Forming their settlements, and remodeling the capital city, the Vrykul join the Alliance.
