Norway chains pull Warcraft

In response to the recent killings in Norway on July 22nd, several Norwegian gaming chains have decided to remove World of Warcraft from their shelves, as reported by Metro.co.uk.

Admitted killer Anders Behring Breivik spoke of Warcraft among other games in his manifesto, including BioShock 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon Age, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Some he said he used as opportunities for "training". Warcraft (or rather claiming addiction to it) served as an excuse to stay home to plan attacks.

It does not appear that other retailers are following suit in other countries. Even in Norway, the move is "temporary", and done out of respect for those that were affected by the massacres. Gaming retailers such as Coop Norway insist they'll be thinking hard about what games they'll allow in the future, but that remains to be seen. Violence in video games and other media are often cited when discussing such events, but the debate rages just how much influence such media has on healthy minds.

  • Around 98% of people who think violent games should be banned haven't played it themselves and just assume they are bad for a healthy mind.

  • Everyone at least has played WoW, Cod or any violent video game. I played Modern Warfare 2, blackops, and WoW in which im a Druid in. But, i dont get crazy over that kind of violence. Face it whats in the game is FAKE. it shows he needs to be in a mental asylum like in the movie Shutter Island.

  • Excellent post. Common sense you would think, but ignorant people, greedy lawyers, and the court system, as well as society allows this bull.

  • I made an account just to comment on this. I've been a gamer for almost all my life and i do not see myself as some kind of extreme, malevolent terrorist just because i, for example, play a warlock. That guy made an excuse for killing these people. He said he played these games, which are somehow directly connected with the fact that he killed the people he killed. We live in an insane world. Today it's video games, yesterday it was a musician, tomorrow who knows? Ive played all the games written above, and yes they were extremely violent, but i dont see how someone with his sanity intact would pull off something like that fellow. Do, for example, Rambo fans, go around killing asians? Hell, movies are violent but i havent seen anyone complaining about, say, the Terminator series, which were very violent, but in my country were given only a 13+.

    • Thanks for the comment! Yes, I think the thing to focus on is the fact this person was clearly not in his right mind to begin with. He played those games because they were violent - but he didn't become violent because he played those games. I can't think of a study that can clearly show such a thing, but debates will continue nonetheless.

  • If games made people violent, I'd have killed most, if not all, of the Minnesota population at this point. Games causing violence is some stupid excuse parents came up with to justify not allowing their kids to play games.

    • C'mon Minnesota isn't that bad. Wisconsin, however... just kidding, they have some great canoeing and lakes too.

  • These are lying rumours. I live in Norway, and World of Warcraft can still be bought theoretically everywhere. If any games have been removed, is surely is not in the biggest stores. COOP supermarket is not exactly known for selling games. Coop is just a grocery store.

    • Thanks for the update. I did think it was strange that such a big deal was made of a grocery store not selling video games.

Games don't make you violent. Media doesn't make you do anything that you don't already want to do. There have been numerous studies and reports published about the correlation between violent video games and the human mind, and not a single shred of evidence to say that games caused any outburst or violent tendency.

It says, "The Norwegian arm of supermarket chain Coop Norden has confirmed that 51 games have been removed from sale," which is not mentioned in the metro.co.uk article.
