Note on DvR 0
D&D uses a ranking system for deities (as defined in 'Deities & Demigods') that goes like so:
- Divine Rank 0 (Quasi-Deity)
- Divine Rank 1 - 5 (Demigod)
- Divine Rank 6-10 (Lesser Deity)
- Divine Rank 11-15 (Intermediate Deity)
- Divine Rank 16-20 (Greater Deity)
- Divine Rank 21+ (Overdeity)
The Lich King was given the traits of a divine rank 0 entity in his writeup, likely due to the eternal template not yet being finalized (since 'Manual of Monsters' predates 'Shadows & Light'). Whether the final version of the eternal template would've been appropriate for him or not, the implication here is that he is a semi-divine being.
Though very limited compared to true deities, rank 0 deities gain the following abilities: maximum hit points per hit dice; increased speed (60 ft. for medium-sized bipeds); a deflection bonus to Armor Class (equal to their Charisma modifier); immunity to polymorphing, petrification, energy drain, ability drain, ability damage, mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects); damage reduction 10/epic; spell resistance 32; the ability to use domain spells as spell-like abilities.
The Lich King possesses all of these traits (though in some cases the immunities overlap with those of the lich template) - this is most notable in that he has maximum hit points per HD, a 60 ft. movement speed, adds his Cha modifier to Armor Class, and has spell resistance 32.
The Lich King
The Lich King's build:
- By combining the stats of Arthas (Fighter 6, Healer 1, Death Knight 10) and Ner'zhul (Fighter 1, Healer 4, Shaman 10, Necromancer 20, lich, DvR 0), we get a Fighter 7, Healer 5, Shaman 10, Necromancer 20, Death Knight 10 with the lich template, divine rank 0, and some unique abilities.
- Note that while that totals 52 Hit Dice (and while he retains the skills, feats, and special abilities of those full 52 levels) the Lich King was mistakenly built as though he had 42 Hit Dice for the purposes of his hit points, attack bonus, saves, and special ability DCs.
Hit Dice: 42d12 (504 hp)
- He has maximum hit points per HD due to DvR 0.
Initiative: +13
- +9 Dexterity modifier, +4 Improved Initiative feat
Speed: 60 ft.
- Arthas' base speed was 30 ft.; DvR 0 doubles it to 60 ft.
Armor Class: 49
- +9 Dex comes from his Dex 28 score; +9 natural is an improved version of the lich template's +5 natural; +13 armor comes from his +5 full plate (full plate has a base armor value of +8); +9 deflection comes from his Cha 27 score (and is granted by DvR 0).
Base Attack/Grapple: +13/+24
- A character's first 20 levels determine their base attack bonus; in this case Ner'zhul's Fighter 1, Healer 4, Shaman 10, Necromancer 5 were used (though it would've made more sense to use Arthas', since the Lich King's swordsmanship would come from him), which give a BAB of +13. A character's levels past 20 (in this case 22 of them, since his total HD was miscalculated) add a +1 bonus to attack rolls for every 2 levels, so that's another +11 (bringing his total base attack bonus to +24). His grapple would actually be +35 (since the author forgot to include his Strength bonus).
Attacks: Frostmourne +41 melee
- +13 base attack bonus + 11 epic attack bonus + 11 Strength + 1 Weapon Focus (bastard sword) + 5 weapon enhancement = +41
Spell +35 melee touch
- +13 base attack bonus + 11 epic attack bonus + 11 Strength = +35
Spell +33 ranged touch
- +13 base attack bonus + 11 epic attack bonus + 9 Strength = +33
Special Attacks:
- Elemental mastery (from shaman levels), undead mastery (from Helm of Domination), rebuke living (from lich template), harm touch (from death knight levels), aura of despair (from death knight levels), mind blast (from Helm of Domination), frightful presence (unique ability), spell-like abilities (from DvR 0), spells (from healer/shaman and necromancer levels)
Special Qualities:
- Darkvision 120 ft. (from lich template), +1 attack vs. humans (Ner'zhul's racial trait), spontaneous casting of inflict spells (from healer levels), evil touch (from healer levels), immunity to cold, fire, and transmutation (from lich template), resistance to acid 20 and electricity 20 (unique ability), DR 15/bludgeoning (from lich template), fast healing 5 (from lich template), animate minions (from lich template, but enhanced), detect undead/outsiders (unique ability), rebuke undead/outsiders (unique ability), spell resistance 32 (from DvR 0), telepathy 100 ft. (unique ability), undead traits (from lich template)
Abilities: Str 32, Dex 28, Con --, Int 30, Wis 32, Cha 27
- He uses Arthas' Strength and Dexterity scores along with Ner'zhul's Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores; see above for how they were calculated.
Skills:
- Here he has all the skill ranks Arthas had and all the skill ranks Ner'zhul had, along with the modifiers for his own ability scores as well as the bonuses from the lich template.
Feats:
- Here he has all the feats Arthas had and all the feats Ner'zhul had (see their feat lists, above). Duplicate feats (like Brew Potion, which they both gained from the Healer class) overlapped and were not replaced.
Elemental Mastery:
- From his shaman levels.
Undead Mastery:
- This ability is granted by the Helm of Domination. Its caster level is 42 because that's the Lich King's (miscalculated) Hit Dice.
Rebuke Living:
- From the lich template.
Harm Touch and Aura of Despair:
- Because of the 'Manual of Monsters' predates the 'Alliance & Horde Compendium', and so the death knight class was not available when the Lich King's stats were written, the author decided to give him some death knight-style abilities based on D&D's blackguard class, which is where these come from.
Mind Blast:
- From the Helm of Domination. Save DC is 10 + 1/2 HD + Cha modifier.
Spell-Like Abilities:
- Caster level is equal to his Hit Dice, save DCs are equal to 10 + Charisma modifier + spell level. Mana drain comes from the lich template. Sound burst, telekinesis, and teleport without error (greater teleport in v3.5) are there to represent his psionic abilities. Cause fear, death knell, death ward, destruction, slay living, and wail of the banshee are 6 of the 9 abilities granted by the D&D Death domain (the other three are animate dead, create undead, and create greater undead, which he may cast at will through the Helm of Domination).
Spells: As a 14th-level healer, with access to the shaman spell list, and as a 20th-level wizard.
- This is another typo; he actually casts as a 15th-level healer (otherwise he wouldn't be able to cast 8th level divine spells, which are gained at 15th level, and of which he has 2 prepared). He gains 1 healer level from Arthas, 4 healer levels from Ner'zhul, and 10 shaman levels from Ner'zhul, for a total of 15 divine spellcasting levels. He also has the 20 wizard [necromancer] levels he gained when he became the Lich King.
Animate Minions:
- This is similar to the ability granted by the lich template, but greatly enhanced since he's, well, the Lich King. :)
Detect Undead/Outsiders and Rebuke Undead/Outsiders:
- These are unique abilities, granted because they are very relevant to his interests.
