Stubs

I'm gonna start concentrating on filling in entries listed in Category:Stubs. - Fandyllic 11:28 AM (PST) 3-Mar-2005

I would appreciate it if you concentrated on categorizing the stubs in Category:Stubs - then start filling out stubs in ares you know a lot about (-:

Hotlinking Images

I noticed you found the new PVP ranking race/class icons to be nice. Do you think we should be hot-linking things on blizzards site like that?

OwlBoy 15:06, 1 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Probably not, but I was too lazy to upload them... Also, since there is liberal re-use of Blizzard text on WoWWiki, I don't see using some minor graphics as a particular sin.

template:equipment

No, I don't mind that you floated template:equipment right. I just thought it's funny that you're so quick to float things, like that and like template:itemtoc. It sounds like user:BaldMonkey doesn't appreciate you having changed itemtoc, and I think equipment was better before, but all told, I don't take it personally. (-: I'm sure I've done similarly, no doubt. Schmidt talk 14:08, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Questions Comments n stuff

I can see you're a pretty experienced user with wiki's. I was just wondering if you may have a few tips as I'm going through and adding my 'stuff' ;). I'm trying to keep with the spirit here and update with what I know, but I see somethings here I still just don't understand :), I finally figured out that:

{ {delete} }

will mark a page for deletion somehow but I still don't understand the "{" type commands.

also how is it if I need to use a double [ mark in my information or { mark even, that I get this to occur without messing up into scripts and such? (if that makes sense ><).

Thanks in advance,

--Tigerheart

I know this isn't my talk page, but I can answer this, just in case Fandyllic doesn't, by the end of tonight. The braces call another article to be displayed. See User talk:BaldMonkey/ItemUse for more information, and see the code on that page.
If you don't use a colon before the article name, it assumes a prefix of Template:. If you put a colon without any other prefix, it displays the page by that name without a namespace. You can also use a namespace with it, too. See User:BaldMonkey/ItemUse (note the link above is a talk page, this isn't). I hope this covers it for you. Schmidt talk 00:08, 20 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Sounds like D. F. Schmidt actually knows alot more than I do. All I know is that tells the wiki to replace what you put with the contents of the template (Template:<template_name>). Templates can be more complex and use variables like 12 which gives you: 12Copper, but I'm not really sure how that works.
--Fandyllic 5:53 PM PDT 20 October 2005

To answer your question about [ vs. [[ vs. { vs. {{...
  • I Don't know what { does (I suppose I could experiment).
    • One brace does nothing, to my understanding, as you can say (in code) &#123;{xxx}}, and nothing of note happens; it is only rendered as plain text: xxx. (See code, if that might help understand. &#123; = { by the way.) The one-brace thing may have some obscure use, but I have no knowledge on that. Schmidt talk 23:54, 20 Oct 2005 (EDT)
  • Using single [ usually works for external links, like [<URL>  <link_name>] makes an external link. Example: Google looks like this Google.
  • Using double [[ usually works for internal wiki links, like <internal_wiki_page> or  <link_name> makes an internal link. Example: Maps looks like Maps and  WoW Maps looks like this WoW Maps.
--Fandyllic 6:06 PM PDT 20 October 2005
The simplest way to display that is with nowiki tags, so that I can type Main Page with nowiki tags around it without repercussions (-:
-- Silver\Side - 18:29, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)

HOWTO: Extract info from a slash command

You redirected HOWTO: Extract info from a slash command to the page with proper capitalization (proper by someone's standards, anyways) rather than keep the delete tag in there. While this would be good in many cases, there is no need to redirect from the above link to the other, because nothing even links to that page anyways, so it's not like anyone will ever see it, so it might as well be deleted. I don't care enough to change it, because it truly doesn't matter. I'm just saying there's no need to redirect something that doesn't even have a link to it, unless it's something that someone might actually search for, like afk for instance. Schmidt talk 23:46, 20 Oct 2005 (EDT)

RE: HOWTO: Extract info from a slash command

That was partially my fault Schmidt. When I created the page I realized it wasn't according to the 'standards' the other pages used, and instead of renaming it since I didn't realize that functionality existed, I created a new page with the proper capitalization and moved the content there, then added the delete tag to the old page when I found out about it. --Tigerheart 21:29, 22 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Category links in redirects

I'm certain I have already replied to you about this, but I can't remember where (probably, though, Category talk:Acronyms). But as long as the #REDIRECT line includes the category link, it will work. The software, however, removes all lines that are below that #REDIRECT line. See TB, among others. I'll basically say this same thing in Category talk:Game terms so others will know. Schmidt talk 00:00, 7 Nov 2005 (EST)

Font color codes

I see that you use <font color="4f4"> for green, and so on. The 3-digit colors work only in CSS, so for instance you'd say <font style="color:#4f4;"> instead, or <font color="44ff44">. The way you had it comes out black instead of the expected green. Schmidt 16:19, 16 Nov 2005 (EST)

Cat:Cleaners

I see that you added me to Category:Cleaners. I of course take no offense by it. I would consider it an honor (as I guess you mean it, or perhaps it was just as a matter of fact), but I haven't cleaned up any vandalism in quite some time. I've added names to the list of vandals, but that's the most I've done in a long time. And why haven't you added yourself? Maybe I'll have to. :) Schmidt 13:39, 25 Nov 2005 (EST)

Even the smallest contribution makes one worthy to join the Cleaners club! Thanks for adding me by the way... ;-)
--Fandyllic 11:58 AM PST 25 November 2005

Join us, fellow editor

I can see that you are near as experienced with wiki code as I am - I want to recruit you to the Community Project A.K.A. WWCP ASAP - if you could get all those acronyms. I would particularly like to have you commandeer the Category and Stub Organization subsect, as I have little time for that with all my mad importing right now, but it is nearly as important as the community pages. I will explain more should you accept (-: And I got to use a first level heading, just cause I am special!

-- Silver\Side - 18:29, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)
I'd like to join you, but I would see that as an endorsement of your manic and pervasive effort. If you would slow down and give an overview somewhere of all changes you plan to make, why you are making them, and why you think the community should accept all those changes (besides merely the fact that you can make those changes, unless you get banned), I would be much more comfortable joining the effort.
You clearly have some grand vision, but are so busy adding a skeleton and structure full of stubs, you haven't stopped to explain it. You could start by filling in all the stubs in WoWWiki Community Project.
For now I am content to watch from the sidelines.
--Fandyllic 9:30 AM PST 4 December 2005
I seriously don't like your tone of voice (text?) - I am doing my best to help this site, my guild (where I usually spend my endless free-time) is asking what the h*ll happened to me, I spend over 7 hours a day on this site or working offline on articles. I don't want to sound selfish - I freely give my time to those who need it, but when I get ungracious comments such as this, I begin to re-think my allocation of time. Anyhow, for now I will continue to do what I am doing - if AY asks me to leave, then I will - I find your comments meaningless and useless. And I don't have the extra time to explain every step I take, and the general direction is obvious - clean up fragmented plans, layout a general goal and direction for the wiki, layout polices and guidelines to help members help us get there, and build a strong friendly community. I see the last one is already falling apart with posts like this (no you are no the first) - maybe I need to allocate less to stubs and more to community construction...
 Silver\Side 14:00, 4 Dec 2005 (EST)
As a second thought, might it not be better for you to spend your time filling out stubs in Category:Stubs/Needed instead of criticizing me...
 Silver\Side 14:02, 4 Dec 2005 (EST)
Now that I've calmed down a bit (that got me rather incensed), I don't mind giving you somewhat of a plan - the reason I am stub off so many articles and apparently 'half-compleating' so many articles is not due to any sort of 'impulsivity', but due t o a logical plan. I have to go to church, parents yelling at me, but be assured I will post a logical reason for my actions (a 'method to my madness' if you will) as soon as I get access to a computer again! Please, let's not harbor hard feelings toward eachother merely for a differing of views on some game; not even some game, but a mere informational resource for that game. I love this site and want to see it lifted high, and I am sure you want the same; lets join together instead of working against eachother, yes?
 Silver\Side 14:37, 4 Dec 2005 (EST)
Ah, back from church (-: now, I only have a moment at this time to post, so I will try to make this as succinct as possible: I simply feel there to be so much work to be done, that I can't even tell what it all is. I am currently finding all the articles that need to be expanded and finding those pages I need to work on and adding them to the correct stub category; specifically, I am adding the ones *I* need to work on as soon as I am through finding them to the Stubs/Needed category. When I finish this, I will begin filling out the articles in the Stubs/Needed category. Once these are mostly filled out (at least enough to get across the content to the Reader) I will get around to categorizing and cleaning up the categories themselves and the various articles around. As a site-track to this, that doesn't really fit in the timeline, is to throw together some Policy pages on various important things (-:
Anyway, hope that all helped to explain it all (-:
 Silver\Side 18:03, 4 Dec 2005 (EST)
I find it odd that you think that your venting above might make me join your effort. Regardless, you'll notice I have made very few changes to your effort. I am not going around reverting lots of your changes (I reserve most of that effort for work done by vandals). I think you misunderstand my perspective.
Let me give you an example:
A bunch of guys hang out at the gym to play pick-up games of basketball. Anyone is welcome, if they like basketball. The group has been around for a year or so and they feel like they're having fun, getting exercise and maybe getting a little bit better at basketball. One day a guy from an organized league shows up who seems to be a pretty good player and is very enthusiastic. However, he thinks this group just isn't getting enough out of their games. They need a referee. They need someone to keep score. They should have a sign up sheet. They should get a scoreboard. The new guy volunteers to to all this stuff and says to the other guys, "Hey, if you want to help out improving the league, sign up or send me a note that you want to help." One of the old guys, who is a good shooter, but a bit slow is heard to be grumbling about how this new guy shows up and wants to bureaucratize their friendly little pickup game. The new guy feels like his efforts are under appreciated.
The guy who owns the gym doesn't seem to care, but he keeps the floors clean, the lighting good, and the doors open. The new guy wants to get a key to the doors and access to the light switches.
The new guy offers an olive branch to the grouchy guy to join the effort to revamp the pickup game into a more organized league. The grouchy guy politely refuses, but continues to grumble. He still plays, but he grumbles.
New guy gets pissed off.
Sound familiar? Anyway, that's how I see it. Maybe you have a different view.
--Fandyllic 2:57 PM PST 5 December 2005
rofl - right on the mark mate - I understand your position fully. I think I've calmed down some there, and I no longer harbor any ill feelings (-:
I totally went off the handle, my bad all the way - anyway, I'll try to slow down and explain my actions a little more (-:
Just a thought.. if you offered to help me, maybe you could control my 'maniac' actions... just a thought - anyway, happy editing either way!

I'm glad we're getting closer to harmony. Just remember to think... this is our wiki and not your wiki or my wiki. You have been doing some things that upset people and seem insensitive. For example, you effectively nuked the "Lore_Questions_%26_Answers" page by making it a redirect with no explanation. Fortunately, Anticrash reacted just by moving alot of what was there to the Magic page. If you multiply events like that by the hundreds of changes you've been making, you might begin to understand why I am concerned. People are much more accepting of change if you explain it. Nothing in this wiki is so important that it has to be done all at once. World of Warcraft is just a game and this wiki is just stuff about that game. I work in the TV industry and we often say: "It's just TV."
--Fandyllic 4:34 PM PST 5 December 2005
HOLY CRAP! So sorry omfg i forgot! I was working on that, then my parents 'confiscated' my computer rofl - I had the old contents of that page stored in clipboard, and was gonna merge all the contents into the new Lore reference desk - I am so sorry I forgot I will go do that now!
If you noticed any other changes where i didn't retain the original content in some way or another, please notify me - they were surely accidental I am so sorry I didn't even notice that )-:
And it is just a game... seriously, no need to get worked up like I did...

Hey, I don't know if you're interested in the whole community team thing, but how would you like to be on the Cat Team? I know you take care of this kind of thing anyways, but I know its fun to be a part of a team. I respect what you do around the site and I'd just like to have you on the roster. Ummmm.. vandalism, insanity, and archival

Three things...

  • ...WTF with the edit on the main page banner template?
  • ...Did you go insane? That edits wording sure made it sound like it (-:
  • ...Mind if I archive your talk page? It is really long lol - or you can do it (-:

Anyway, (-: --  ℑilver§ℑide 01:05, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)

P.S. Added you to WoWWiki:Crazy people - hope you don't mind! Hope enough people vote for you (-:

My "vandalism" was a poor hint that you shouldn't say, "Do not edit this page." You should say something like: "Please only edit this page if you explain what you did in the discussion area." I'll make a comment in Main Page Dev discussion page explaining myself.
I'll archive my talk page at some point, but I figure its okay until I get the nearing 30k warning.
--Fandyllic 14:56 PST, 15 Dec 2005
Yah I added that note *FOREVER* ago when I was just starting the page and was literally working on it at the time; I then moved on the community teams project and haven't remembered to go back and remove that note ^^/
Now I did --  ℑilver§ℑide 18:49, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)
Yeah, when I saw that edit, I thought the same – "Did he just go insane, or is he schizophrenic?" I guess all is well. By the way, the "currenttime" thing doesn't work right; you need to say perhaps. But the way it is makes it so it's the current time every time the page is viewed. Schmidt 18:54, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)
On that note, there are ways to do all kinds of cool stuff with VARIABLES (variables are things like CURRENTTIME and PAGENAMEE) within templates but it's hard and unintuitive - I suggest you just stick with the five tilde system after your signature or whatever you like... --  ℑilver§ℑide 18:58, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)

Hey fandy, about all your changes to the user categorization system - how about we discuss them on WoWWiki_talk:User_categorization first, then write a page atWoWWiki:User categorization, THEN begin marking categories {delete} and adding / removing category tags from users' pages? lol --  ℑilver§ℑide 21:09, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)

Extended... hiatus

Quote (Schmidt, earlier, somewhere else, new):

In the interests of keeping things orderly, even at the expense of efficiency, it would be nice to have things voted on. This way we don't have to wonder if something that is found on the policy page really was arrived at with concensus. The reasoning behind me even starting the policy page (I'm very surprised no one had developed one beforehand) is that I wanted everyone to agree on it. It was poorly worded, and I had hoped that someone would be able to rewrite it by now. I hope that we can write things a little more formally (not esoterically) and vote on things as written, and if someone disagrees we can reword it before it gets to the regular policy page so that we don't have to rewrite anymore. Is this understandable? (I'm pretty tired.)

Yah... me too. But I am particularly tired of fighting against people... I can see that, although the users here are mostly young and progressive, they still seem to act somewhat like a group of museum curators... assuming that any attempt at change from outside is vandalism and not perhaps a symbol that something is wrong. I can only fight the good fight against my own side for so long... soon such a cross between the 'cold' and the 'civil' wars becomes to much for a busy man like me to handle. I am, from this posting forward, on an extended wikibreak, until such time as I mature and see that I really fucked up, and that obviously everything is my fault (as everybody else already does - doesn't that mean they must be right? but I saw it on TV mama...). Anyway, I am putting you in charge of the Community Teams project, I hope you can organize the community here into something more productive and organized than the bureaucratic nonsensical... mass it is at this time - I have been rather unsuccessful in that respect. Knowing you as well as I do (as in, not at all) I would assume you would leave some note along the lines of "slow down and be careful, and people will be easier to work with" - I can not slow down. I work at my own pace, that is precisely why I am taking a break. I wish you the best of luck with this project; and I am sure it will continue on unimpeded by the lack of organization and properly designed policy... the fact that all the information contained herein is becoming more and more fragmented and badly formated every day as more and more people post more and more info in more and more formats matters not, as the 'community will vote' upon proper policy and decide what is best... soon ,you will be beyond the point of even an army of feverish editors like me from making every article conform to whatever delayed standards you decide upon. In friendly warning,  ℑilver§ℑide

PS1: Please do not broadcast this or anything similar around... I do not wish to spawn any more drama than is necessary. This message is for those I post it to; thanks for understanding as a personal friend. If you wish to leave me a note on my talk page, make sure to send me an e-mail in tandem so I know to visit back and reply! Finally, if you (the leaders I have asked to head up the various community teams) wish to use the forums, they are still there - unlike the wiki itself, I will be checking them and changing them as per the requests of the members there. Have a nice day friends...

API cat project

Hi mate, I think you jumped the gun by launching the project. Anticrash wanted a vote before kicking off the API category defuncting project. Also, I still have an unanswered question about whether there is a better way, at WoWWiki_talk:Cat_Team/Worklog --Hammersmith 21:06, 29 Dec 2005 (EST)

Main Page Templatage

I am thinking... I have, procured a copy of the kbot that drives pitz92 and similar, and know one thing: it should not dive into templates. So, just as a suggestion, try using the 'move' feature on the main page and moving it to something like Template:Main Page - then replacing the content on the main page with nothing but Main Page and locking that, but leaving the Template:Main Page unlocked! That would keep spammers off and allow the community to decide on something less atrocious together? -  ℑilver§ℑide 23:05, 29 Dec 2005 (EST)

Hmmm... that's potentially good idea. Let me think about it and research any potential pitfalls. If your still with us, maybe you could evolve your WoWWiki:Main Page Dev to get some consensus from some of the major contributors (like Community Team leaders and maybe even LAISREN), so we can possibly do a wholesale update of the main page also.
