Biography[]

Vorenthal-the-seer

Voren'thal the Seer in-game.

Voren'thal was a potent magister that followed Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider to Outland. When Illidan Stormrage decided to strike against Shattrath City, believing the naaru's holdings could threaten his own sovereignty over Outland,[2] he left the matter to Kael'thas and his blood elves. The prince ordered Voren'thal to lead the attack, but the battle would end before a single drop of blood was spilled.

En route to Shattrath, Voren'thal had a vision of the future: a time when his people would rise up and live free from addiction and despair, restored to their glory. At the heart of the vision was a naaru, shining its Holy Light over Quel'Thalas and easing the torment in the soul of every blood elf it touched. Voren'thal was forever changed by this vision. The blood elves that had followed Kael to Outland had languished on the ruined planet with almost nothing to show for it but further pain. Voren'thal knew that the salvation of his race did not lie with his increasingly unstable prince or the capricious Betrayer.

Voren'thal told his followers of what he had seen, that the key to saving their people may in fact lie with the naaru. Many were optimistic, and shared his sentiments; they were desperate for a new, better path to follow.[3]

The blood elf forces approached Shattrath, and the Aldor vindicators and exarchs prepared to defend their city. However, the unexpected happened - the blood elves put down their weapons before the draenei defenders. Voren'thal stepped forward and demanded an audience with the master of the Sha'tar, the naaru A'dal. As A'dal approached him, Voren'thal went to his knees before the naaru and said, "I've seen you in a vision, naaru. My race's only hope for survival lies with you. My followers and I are here to serve you." A'dal accepted the offer of assistance from Voren'thal and his men, who became known as the Scryers. This defection proved to be devastating to Kael, and subsequently to Illidan; Voren'thal's forces had included many of Kael's most gifted scholars and magisters.

Voren'thal sent word to Kael'thas, urging him to break away from Illidan and lead their people to Shattrath, but Kael was furious that his army had abandoned him to follow the naaru. Publicly, he condemned the act as treason and an attack on his sovereignty as prince. Privately, he saw Voren'thal's defection as evidence of his own failure.[4]

After the defection, Voren'thal and his followers set a base in what is now known as the Scryer's Tier in the southern part of Shattrath. Voren'thal himself continues to lead the Scryers from within the Seer's Library at the center of the Tier, where he directs the Scryers' efforts against both Kael'thas and Illidan.

Before he joined Shattrath, at some point he killed Kaylaan's brother.

When Maiev Shadowsong approached A'dal to ask for help against the Betrayer, the naaru refused to help her but advised her to see Voren'thal. As she turned to leave, she saw a blood elf walking toward her and thought it Voren'thal. She just raced past him and left.[5]

According to the quest text in Turning Point, Voren'thal is in rather poor health; he says "My frail health prevents me from aiding you in person with this endeavor", indicating that he is not well.

Also, according to the quest text in Bound for Glory, he also appears to be old in relation to other blood elves; Spymaster Thalodien says, "Make sure Voren'thal doesn't topple over with excitement from the news - the old man's getting a bit fragile, if you know what I mean.", pointing once again to the fact that he Voren'thal ill.
