When used, the Weather-Beaten Journal teaches the player Find Fish, the ability to observe fishing spots on the mini-map in the same manner as the hunter's ability to track beasts. This is the only way to gain the Find Fish ability.

Weather-Beaten Journal is a World Drop looted from within containers found when fishing, most commonly from pools such as Floating Wreckage.

It can be found inside any container gathered from fishing, including [Curious Crate] amongst others. It can also be found inside the daily fishing quest reward, [Bag of Fishing Treasures (Terokkar Forest)].

• [Tightly Sealed Trunk] fished along the coast of Darkshore, Loch Modan, Silverpine Forest, Westfall, or The Barrens about 0.6% of the time
• [Watertight Trunk] fished along the coast of Hillsbrad Foothills, Wetlands, Ashenvale, or Stonetalon Mountains about 4% of the time
• [Iron Bound Trunk] fished along the coast of Stranglethorn Vale, Dustwallow Marsh, Alterac Mountains, or Desolace about 3% of the time
• [Mithril Bound Trunk] fished along the coast of Stranglethorn Vale, Tanaris, Feralas, or Azshara about 2% of the time
• [Heavy Supply Crate] fished in Zangarmarsh about 2% of the time
• [Curious Crate] fished in the waters of Zangarmarsh, Terokkar Forest, or Nagrand about 1.7% of the time
• [Bag of Fishing Treasures] from  [70Daily] Crocolisks in the City about 3% of the time

Notes

If you already have the Find Fish ability, you may catch additional Weather-Beaten Journals, but you cannot see the Weather-Beaten Journal in the containers you are attempting to loot. What this means is that if you have the Find Fish ability, and you catch a container while fishing, and you loot the container, but the container does not disappear, then the container is not empty and probably contains another copy of this valuable item.

Also, the character looting the container must have at least apprentice Fishing training (must have at least 1 skill point in the Fishing skill) in order to see the Weather-Beaten Journal in the container being looted.

While the Weather-Beaten Journal is Bind on Pickup, the enclosing container does not bind and so therefore the container can be traded/sold just like any other item.

The important point is to know that the container is not empty and holds a valuable item, and to not inadvertently destroy the Weather-Beaten Journal by destroying the persistent, apparently empty container.

Patch 2.3.0 (2007-11-13): Added.
Patch 2.4.0 (2008-03-25): Now detects Schools of Tastyfish during the weekly Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, as well as Muddy Churning Waters used in the process of summoning Gahz'ranka in Zul'Gurub.
