Notable reward(s) [Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber]

The Wintersaber Trainers is an Alliance-only faction consisting of only two night elven NPCs that can both be found in Winterspring. Currently, the only questgiver is Rivern Frostwind who is located at the top of Frostsaber Rock in Winterspring. Upon reaching exalted with this faction, Rivern will sell a special mount, the Winterspring Frostsaber.

This faction's mount is the only epic ground mount (100% riding speed) attainable in the game which only requires 75 Riding Skill. The faction is noted for having no Horde counterpart and having the longest and most repetitive reputation grind of the entire game. The first two quests can be attained at level 58, while the other one is attainable at level 60. Level 70 players do not receive reduced reputation from these quests.

Before The Burning Crusade was released, the first two available quests (Alliance Crest [60] Frostsaber Provisions and Alliance Crest [60] Winterfall Intrusion) only gave you 50 reputation, and Alliance Crest [60] Rampaging Giants gave you 75 reputation. That meant that you were to complete a total of 840 quests before you could buy this mount, notice that at level 60 the mobs were a lot harder to kill than they are at level 70. After TBC was released the reputation gain increased from 50 rep per quest to 75 rep per quest and 100 rep per quest for Quest:Rampaging Giants - that meant that you would only have to do 560 quests in total to reach Exalted. Patch 2.3 brought a lot of increased reputation gains with the pre-TBC factions [1], and increased the reputation gained, so the first two quests now gives you 250 reputation each and Quest:Rampaging Giants gives you 350 reputation per turn-in. That means that you are only required to do 168 times now, which means that this mount is now much easier to get.

Let's say that each quest including travel takes an average of 15mins. - 15mins*168=2520 minutes - that's 42 hours of ingame played time, which isn't a lot compared to pre-TBC where each quest took an average of 25 minutes (due to only being level 60 and increased amount of players grinding for Timbermaw Hold reputation, which was needed for several pre-TBC enchants), 840*25=21000 minutes; that's 350 hours which is equal to 14,58 days of played time.

Strategy

Neutral: 0/3000 to 1500/3000

Only one repeatable quest will available at first, so until neutral 1500/3000 is reached the Alliance Crest [60] Frostsaber Provisions quest should be repeated. Any Shardtooth and Chillwind mob in Winterspring will drop these when you have the quest, but not otherwise. This quest should be done solo as the drop rates are low and not shared if others have the quest. It will take 6 completions for this part, requiring 30 of each meat.

Neutral 1500/3000 to Honored

Halfway through neutral the Alliance Crest [60] Winterfall Intrusion quest will be available. This quest requires to kill 10 Winterfall mobs in the Winterfall Village, just east of Everlook. If the quest Neutral [58] Winterfall Activity has been done with the Timbermaw Hold, [Winterfall Spirit Beads] can drop from the Winterfall mobs. If a player wants both reputations, saving these until revered with Timbermaw Hold will result in a lot of "free" reputation.

This quest can be done in groups for increased speed. Players grinding either Wintersaber Trainers or Timbermaw Hold reputation can often be found in the Winterfall Village. Even with an epic mount, the travel to and from Winterfall Village takes up much time. There are tigers among the route who may daze you, which will result in a dismount, this should be avoided (but can be hard as they'll catch up with you on a 60% mount). Usually this quest is repeated all the way to exalted, ignoring the third quest.

There are fewer Shamans than Ursas in Winterfall Village. If you kill the Ursas and Denwatchers in the village, Shamans may spawn to replace them. There are about six Ursas and an occasional Shaman up on the hills behind the village. There is also a Shaman that spawns outside the village entrance and one in the cave with Chief Winterfall.

If you don't want to have to run all the way to the quest giver and back so much picking up both the Frostsaber Provisions and Winterfall Intrusion quests at the same time can save some time, though Provisions takes longer it saves a ton of traveling time per turn in since you can go from Quest giver to Winterfall Village for one and on the way back just head north to do Provisions getting 2 quests done per travel.

Something else that will save you some time is setting your Hearthstone to Everlook when doing the quest Neutral [58] Winterfall Activity. This will enable you to hearthstone down, kill the furlbolgs and collect the meat on the way back to the trainer. When the heartstone is on cooldown, you can just run and collect the meat on your way down to Winterfall Village. If you don't get enough meat on the way down, just gather them on your way back.

Honored to Exalted

At honored the third quest Alliance Crest [60] Rampaging Giants is available. The quest requires the player to kill 4 Frostmaul giants and 4 Frostmaul Preservers. They are a lot harder than the Winterfall mobs and the travel lengths are quite longer. This quest is usually skipped, and instead Winterfall Intrusion is repeated. If you can handle the Frostmaul giants, it can be efficient to do both the Rampaging Giants quest and Winterfall Intrusion quest together. This cuts the number of trips back to Frostsaber Rock by more than half given that the Rampaging Giants quest gives 100 more rep than the Winterfall quest.

Due to some players grinding Timbermaw Hold reputation and doing several quests in Winterfall Village, this quest can indeed turn out to be a faster reputation reward than the Winterfall Intrusion one. Often it may be hard to find enough of one of the two types of Frostmaul required. If you kill the abundant kind, more of the other kind will usually spawn.

There are about two dozen Shardtooth bears on the Hyjal side of the bridge, making that part of the Provisions quest easier.

Associated bugs

  • Draenei characters were not able to buy the mount upon hitting exalted [2], but it's fixed now [3].
  • At one point, Blood Elves were not hostile to this faction and could receive neutral upon interacting with them - the quests could not be attained though. This was recently fixed, and they are hostile to blood elves, and even in the armory the faction is gone. [4]
