INV Misc QuestionMark

A few members of the WoWWiki community have started a major cleanup job of our in-game icon repository, cleaning out duplicates, fixing naming, and categorizing them all under Category:WoW Icons. A big round of applause is in order from the rest of us, and if you want to help out, look below, or post in the project discussion page if you have any questions!

Icons from World of Warcraft

The game uses for spells and items a few thousand different icons. Each of them is stored within the MPQs and is accessible on certain database websites such as Allakhazam.

Every icon has most of the time multiple uses, and for this reason they need, when uploaded on WoWWiki, to strictly keep the same name as the one given in the data files.

To upload an icon on the Wiki, first download it from a site such as Allakhazam or Wowhead. Right click the icon and save it, keeping the exact name it had when selected. Once that is done, go to Special:Upload. As destination filename, keep the exact name of the icon. Remember to verify its extension is .png, that its size is 64x64, and that it doesn't already exist.

If you do not wish to go through these troubles when creating a spell or item page, use the template Template:Tlink and another WoWWikian will eventually update it.

Note that currently we are limiting the use of icons from the upcoming expansion as they are subject to change.

WoW Icons Organization Agenda

> Step 1: Using a master list of in-game icons, comb through the existing WoWWiki Uploaded Icons and ascertain the filename is correct and then be categorized initially according to filename. Where icons are missing, they will be uploaded with a .png with transparency available. This also includes marking for deletion the icons that have been uploaded with incorrect filenames, and their associated articles corrected as well. (COMPLETE)

> Step 2: All JPG icons will be then replaced by their PNG equivalent on the wiki. The old JPG icons will be deleted and articles linking them will be corrected. We will also begin monitoring articles for icon-usage, and correcting/placing where needed. IN PROGRESS

> Step 3: Once the list is complete, a thorough, searchable keyword list/directory will be assembled, both in a mini-table form and a full page form. The goal is to make it very easy for someone to locate an icon with minimal knowledge about it. This includes additional cross-referenced categories.
