Welcome to the village pump! Edit

This is the first post on the village pump. As WoWWIki continues to grow and expand, this page will begin to see a lot of action. If your question is not related directly to policy or the administration of the wiki, then it might be best to ask somewhere else (-:

Does the WoWWiki Admin read this? Edit

Does Rustak (I think he's still the admin) know about this page? Just curious. -- Fandyllic

Yah he's still admin, and I sent him an E-Mail about gaining adminship - and village pump is the least of the pages, and I haven't even worked on it - just pretty much reserved the page and said what it was for lol (-:
 Silver\Side - 18:01, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)
So it sounds like you don't know if Rustak has any idea of what you're doing, but hope to become an admin.
--Fandyllic 9:07 AM PST 4 December 2005
I was in e-mail contact with rustak for a short time (seem to have lost contact now, he failed to respond to my last one) but he understands that I (and many others here; see waaaaaay below on this page) think there needs to be another admin (I personally think admin privileges should be handed out more freely; say 3-5 more admins; although BC should be held much more tightly). I am not leaving the site admin in the dark about my actions or wishes; I am not that stupid. --  ℑilver§ℑide 15:25, 9 Dec 2005 (EST)

Link here from Main page discussion Edit

Is there a link to here in the Main Page discussion area? I was too lazy to check... ;-) --Fandyllic

Ahh, many things have changed in relation to the main page and discussions and such... try some links out, *especially* the Community Portal and Main Page Dev pages - I am currently petitioning him for adminship so I can apply what we come up with for the Main Page to the actual Main Page, and I can keep it updated. I have now spent exactly 26 hours straight cleaning up and adding much needed organizational structure - check out WoWWiki:Introduction and WoWWiki:Where to ask a question!
I just noticed how braggy that sounded rofl - I am just here to help, I have more than a little experience with Wikipedia, and moreso with Wikisource and Wikimedia code and want to help out this awesome project (-:

26 hours! You might want lay off the meth for a while and get some sleep... =-D
--Fandyllic

Edit

I was bored - at least it says what the name is rofl!

Any thoughts other than 'It sucks'?

I'm partial to sans-serif fonts... you might want to remove the year. WoWWiki is forever! --Fandyllic
Well, I had to put *SOMETHIN* there - I hated the look when it was blank lol
 Silver\Side 20:03, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)
I'm partial to serif fonts, especially in small caps like you have it. (Or at least it appears small caps.) But yeah, the year shouldn't be included especially 2005 (since it's about over), but not 2006 either, because it sounds like we're trying to sell a car or something. Schmidt 20:12, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)
IMHO, to much clutter covering the face Perhaps if the lettering was curved around the lower right, like a mirror image perhaps. and agreed no dates. If I was to look for a logo I would first go with something not square, use a transparent background. Also something that does not expand the left ally so much --StrCat 15:20, 2 Dec 2005 (EST).
Wha? left ally? The width of the navigation panel is set permenatly... although I agree on the date and path - I mde this in exactly 5 seconds and spent two minutes uploading it ROFL (-:

New one: http://www.avxworkshop.com/img/ww/icon.png linked here (to prevent bandwidth wastage) I think you'll love this much more (-:

That's pretty hot, silver. Waaayy better.

All discussion on this should be had at WoWWiki:Proposed icon. A second one has been placed there also. --  ℑilver§ℑide 20:03, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

Is SilverSide too enthusiastic? Edit

Silver, I love your enthusiasm, but you need to give a little time to at least explain yourself when you make hordes of major changes. The other problem is that lots of your changes are half-finished (and not stubbed either), so they look pretty but may disrupt the original intent of the page without any explanation. Another problem you have is making pages overly busy for often dubious apparent reasons. Sometimes simple is good.

--Fandyllic 11:30 AM PST 2 Deember 2005
Well technically the entire Wiki is a work in progress - looks barely off the ground. I think it has a lot of potential, but it needs a lot of work; also, I am a firm believer in minimilism - you should see my desktop. However, these high profile pages; the Main Page, the Community Portal, ETC all need to present themselves in an attractive way. Just let me do what I'm doing; when I finish you can pass judgement d-:
 Silver\Side 19:42, 2 Dec 2005 (EST)
I wanted to point that out too. You need to explain and discuss your changes, otherwise people will simply revert your hard work. You might also consider that not all of the viewers share your appeal for flashy graphics. Also, one of the design common-sense rules says you should only use 2, max. 3 base colours for a web-page (except black and white, which are non colours). So, please, leave the rainbows alone ;) (don't take it personal, but how old are you? :)
Stilpu 09:32, 3 Dec 2005 (EST)

Heh. What he/she (Stilpu) said...
I like some of what you are doing, but remember that some people in the community (who have been contributing for awhile) may not subscribe to your grand vision. The wiki is an open collaboration but without some level of consensus, changes can become an endless revert-fest. Also, one might think by reserving many, many pages without filling them in, you are page squatting and might be misusing the wiki.
--Fandyllic 9:09 AM PST 4 December 2005
Ha! Look at the pages I am 'squatting' - only pages related to policy and communication and cleanup. Why would I squat here? I have three of my own MediaWiki installations to 'squat on' if I wished to do so (for the interested, its VideoWiki, GunWiki, and an old Warcraft Wiki before I found this, still use the last one for my guild) - I am here merely to help. I understand very well the spirit of a wiki (major contributor at Wikipedia) and have no desire to vandalise. I am merely doing my best to improve the wiki. The reason I am making so many changes so fast is because I have lots of free time at the moment... probably 15 or 20 times what most of you have. Usually this is not the case, but I intend to spend it well while I have it. Anyway, fell free to make changes to my work, but remember I have a very good reason for everything I do, and it may get reverted (with a long and satisfactory explanation of why on the discussion page). Anyway, I have to go finish stubbing off some 514 pages that are linked from more than 2 places but don't have an article...
 Silver\Side 13:50, 4 Dec 2005 (EST)
I think all I really wanted to say is: Relax... Maybe you can try to fill in 1 stub for every 2 you make.
--Fandyllic 10:35 AM PST 9 December 2005
I understand; I will try! If you look at My Contribs you'll see that I have an edit summary on almost every edit I do now! Does that make you happy? (-:

Admins Edit

I have seen requests in several places for more admins, and they are right. Not only I, but 2 or 3 other members deserve adminship, such as shmidt and fellic and cyberskull (if he's still around) - and not only that, but we need more admins, REGARDLESS of who they are!

From User_talk:Puta20:

Since Oct. 22, Puta20 has made nearly 5000 spam edits. He's hiding website links, messing up formatting, and clogging the history for individual pages and the wiki as a whole. I understand that vandalism will always be a problem, and there will always be corrections to be made, but that's assuming that prompt administrative action will be taken against the offenders. It's futile to try and maintain the integrity of WoWWiki's articles when competing against a bot. I think this wiki could definitely benefit from a couple more admins.

From User_talk:Fandyllic

Fandyllic - Nice work on adding the Template:In-game-book-article and Article type! Thanks!
(I just hadn't gotten around to it.)
Don't forget though that the template adds the category, so for an article like The_Alliance_of_Lordaeron, we have to remember to remove the samed-named category so that we don't get a Category duplication at the bottom.
Also, you asked about vadals: I think the admins don't actually visit that often, so any action will have to be a community action. Maybe start by listing the user account names somewhere so we can watch them? That seems like a good idea actually. Starting the list now: [1]. We should just petition Rustak to make us Admins though. :-) Regards, Laisren [ Laisren 18:42, 5 Aug 2005 (EDT) ]

From WoWWiki_talk:Namespace

Have the admins gone on vacation cause I only see two listed and to the best of my knowledge for alot of this sort of stuff we really need them to make some changes on the source files on the server.
--BaldMonkey 17:48, 30 Sep 2005 (EDT)

From User_talk:AlexanderYoshi

Special:Listadmins lists only two admins. (user:Admin has never contributed anything; I think it's a safe assumption to say that that's a dummy account.) Neither one (you nor user:Rustak) has been active in quite some time. There are some that would say that Main Page needs updating or other changes. At least two besides me have contributed to WoWWiki:Policy, a new page that I made seeking to standardize article naming, categorizing, etc. We would like an admin to endorse that, along with the possibility of making new namespaces (see WoWWiki:Namespace and its talk page). I for one say that too many articles should be deleted.
Could we get another person or two on the admin list? Would you want us to list nominations someplace? Let us know. Thanks. Schmidt talk 02:30, 6 Oct 2005 (EDT)

There are many others, but I don't have time to hunt them down now. This is a universal community cryout for more admins! If you look at Wikipedia, they have a copious amount of admins. Admins really don't have much power more than plain old editors, but we still need one around all the time! Help!

 Silverhttp://avxworkshop.com/img/ss16.pngSide 02:28, 5 Dec 2005 (EST)

Finally; fandyllic was made an admin! Good going mate hehe --  ℑilver§ℑide 20:02, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

Trading area Edit

I wonder if we need some kind of trading area, perhaps an area on the Community Portal or at least linked from there - it would be a major page, but I am not sure how to structure it to use the Wiki formatting to the best advantage for this kind of page. I will create it at WoWWiki:Trade, but I am not quite sure what to put there now... obviously, organize by server... no need to organize by side, I guess, because of the dual Auction House... give me your ideas! So far, my crazy level of editing has been based on the fact that I already know what I am doing, but here I am forging new ground - and I need community support (-:

 Silverhttp://avxworkshop.com/img/ss16.pngSide 15:34, 5 Dec 2005 (EST)
I think spending time on a wiki auction house or trading floor is a waste of time and database space. The audience is small, the demand is low, and the database bloating that will result from all of the changes (assuming it was kept current) would be a poor return for the likelihood that only a handful of people would benefit from it. Then again, that's assuming that the community was willing to contribute to it to keep it updated. If you look through the Category:Servers, you'll probably note that the servers hardly list even a fraction of the total guilds on a server, let alone even capturing the largest guilds on the server.
A specialized trading addon (like the census addon that several websites provide) would probably be the best idea. If the addon would inventory every non-BOP item in your character's possession, and allow you to modify that list via your website profile as "tradable," then someone could search for tradable items via the website. This would allow people who have something to be found by people who are looking for something. However, while I can imagine the idea, my ability to code such a project is non-existant. --Mazian 12:30, 16 Dec 2005 (EST)
This has already been discussed lol - that's a dead project --  ℑilver§ℑide 12:35, 16 Dec 2005 (EST)
"Every non-soulbound item", not "every non-BOP item" — plenty of BOE items might be soulbound. Semantics, I know, but wording is important (to me and people like me). Schmidt 07:58, 19 Dec 2005 (EST)
